We are thinking of staying 3 nights in the Mt. Hood area, July 7-10 ish. We like short hikes, nature, maybe white water raft, wine tasting & def. want to visit Col. River Gorge. Since we've never been there , can anyone rec. a good home base near Mt. Hood? Possible cabin rental?
Thanks Joan

You should be able to find most of what you want in the town of Hood River. If you get the chance, spend a night or two at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood.
The popular sport in this section of the Columbia River is sailboarding.
There are many wineries south of Portland in the Willamette Valley.
If you wanted to come over the Santiam Pass you could rent a cabin at Camp Sherman near the headwater of the Metoulius River.
The full size river comes right out of the ground at the foot of Black Butte. The Black Butte Resort also has some nice lodging. also along US 20.
I vote for Timberline too. Government Camp at the bottom has some options too. Hike Trillium Lake at the bottom for a nice easy interesting trail with views of the mountain in the background along the way, or maybe even go for a swim.
Ride the chair lift up and hike back down while on top of the mountain.
