Mother and Daughter vacation

My 23 year old daughter and I would like to go somewhere for a week during the summer. We went to San Francisco last year and really enjoyed. Need recommendation for this year. Not too expensive.

Perhaps you could give an idea of what sort of things you like to do? Outdoors? Culture and shows? Rest and relaxation?

Barbara- try Montreal and Quebec City... with the US exchange rate at over $1.50, you get a huge bang for your buck, and a trip you won't forget.

was just going to mention Quebec it is Europe without actually being Europe. I would also consider Tadousac which is 4 hours from Quebec you get to see three different types of whales in a very idealic setting. Mountains along side the Saganae (sp) river. The UN has deemed this place an international resourse with a title I can't remember. What part of the country are you in? You know there is also Paris, Italy. I find European cities well not always Paris but certainly Milan, Florence very affordable. Certainly cheaper than San Francisco. All kinds of ways to get around airfare costs if that is a concern. I would bid and call bucket shops for deals. In July you can hit all of the sales in stores there is a direct flight form NY area where are you?

US we have wonderful countryside but cities? I live in NYC hot muggy and no one is here in summer. I like DC but Europe will knock your socks off and it is not as expensive as you think. Ok know this is not a European board I just like to mention this as sometimes people don't know what they are missing skipping Europe. If you stay in once city a week is plenty of time. Have a wonderful time where every you go.

My mother and I go on vacations every so often ... (ages 73 & 47)...

We really enjoyed Williamsburg, VA ... she's the history buff, not I - yet this colonial village makes history VERY interesting. It was an relatively inexpensive vacation and we stayed at a great B & B!

Also, San Antonio may be a good bet for you, or New Orleans. Both cities you can fly to, and not have the expense of a rental car ...

Do searches on the web for excellent sites on all areas ...

RE: Jill's comments...normally I would agree that San Antonio and New Orleans are great places to go but if you are looking to go in the summer, I wouldn't recommend it. It is very hot and very humid...both are walking cities so it can really be miserable. Of course, if you are from the south and are used to it, it should be ok.

What about Chicago? Great city with lots of shopping, culture, and sights.

When I was 22 my mother and I went on a vacation together to Disney World. It probably sounds silly - but aside from walking around Disney world just to see the incredible creativity and everything, there really is a lot to do. We went to Epcot which is great for adults, Universal Studios, and Pleasure Island at night which is a whole bunch of different "theme" nightclubs. I thought it would be kind of lame, to go to Disneyworld just me and my mom, but I really enjoyed it! Just a suggestion.

It depends on what you like. Here are a few of my suggestions that I don't think will break the bank...

Quebec City really is like a little bit of Europe in North America. My husband and I had a wonderful time there a few years ago.

NYC has something for (almost) everyone.

San Diego-- if you like the beach and animals

Philadelphia-- if you like art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Barnes Foundation, and Wyeth family studio. They also have a wonderful garden there but I have a brain freeze right now and can't think of the name of it.

Chicago-- cheap airfare on Southwest, friendly city with lots of shopping and great architecture, also a great art museum.

Bahamas-- I think you can find some good deals there right now.

Maine-- quaint beaches and gift shops

Cape May, NJ-- Victorian beach town with lots of B&B, never been there but my family on the east coast goes every year and says it's nice.

I live in CA, my mom in FL. I made a vow to do something with mom (now an active 73 year old) every year. Last year we met in Seattle, stayed one night (dinner on the waterfront) and then took the train the next morning (lovely ride, nice brunch) to Vancouver, Canada. We spent a few nights there and then took the ferry to Victoria. We had high tea at the Empress, sat in on Parliment, did the British Museum and the wonderful Buchart(?)Gardens. We took the high speed boat (can't think of the name now) through the San Juan Islands back to Seattle. We spent the night at a Seattle airport hotel and both left for home in the early AM. One week and very enjoyable. Hope this helps.

Barbara, I just took my 22 year old daughter to Paris for a week. We had a fabulous time and it was only about $2500. Three of us spent more than that on a 4 day ski trip over Thanksgiving! You don't need expensive accommodations (ours were about $100 a night) and expensive meals to have a great time. Something to consider.

grasshopper where did you stay? sounds great and it does not sound like you cut too many corners. I usually go even cheaper but I have never treated anyone to Paris before.

I took my mom to New Orleans for her 60th birthday and we had a blast. We went on walking tours, a tour of the plantations and roamed endlessly around the French Quarter shopping and eating. But I would have to agree that summer may not be a good time of year for New Orleans.

We also went with one of my aunts last year to Vancouver Island, Vancouver and Seattle and had a great time. Vancouver is a beautiful city and offers a lot to do for varying age ranges. And the weather is much nicer up there in the summer than other regions.

We stayed at Hotel Quai Voltaire which has gotten panned by some on the Europe board. It's not fancy and you need to be willing to walk about 1/4 mile to the nearest metro/RER stop but it was perfectly servicable and had the most MARVELOUS view. It's right on the Seine and we looked across to the Louvre. Be sure to ask for a room in front on the 4th or 5th floor (there's an elevator!)

We took my mom and my mother-in-law (2 different trips) to Ojai for the weekend. We stayed and the Ojai Valley Inn. We spent time in the spa, went on jeep tours, did some biking/hiking and ate at great restaurants. The men played golf while we were at the spa. It would be a great vacation spot for a mother-daughter trip. Ojai is just under 1.5 hours from the LA airport and is also close to Santa Barbara (about a half hour).

If this suits you, look at the website for the Omega Institute, in Rhinebeck, NY, which is a residential holistic learning center in the Catskills--people come from all over the world to do things like study yoga, or learn to sing, possibly even attend mother/daughter workshops. Activities are either for a week or a week-end.

The setting is lovely, a giant campus with a lake, the lodging is simple (but adequate, the higher-level rooms are like decent motel rooms), the food is lovely inspired vegetarian. There's time off as well as activities, and absolutely all ages all the time. I try to spend at least a week there every summer.

Some yoga-minded people also like Kripalu, in the Berkshires, I haven't been there.
