Are the Motel 6 in Los Angeles a good place to stay?

Assuming there are more than one Motel 6 locations(?) in Los Angeles, WHERE specifically it is, is more important than anything about this hotel chain.

We were looking at the Motel 6 Santa Ana (1623 East 1st Street) or the one on San Gabriel Blvd, Rosemead. Or would a Best Western be better? The one on Colorado Blvd... But it's far away from Santa Monica.

I have not stayed at a Motel 6 in years, but I remember them as extremely cheap and very, very basic accommodations. A Best Western is probably nicer and more expensive.

If you want to visit Santa Monica, don't think that you will be saving any money by staying in Santa Ana or in Rosemead. The traffic into the West L.A./Santa Monica area will probably require 3 hours of stressful driving (round trip) and that doesn't even consider the gasoline you will burn. To make a long story short, there is no "cheap" lodging in the Santa Monica area unless you consider a YMCA or something similar.

Santa Ana is down in Orange County, it's nowhere near Hollywood or the LA beaches you asked about in your other post.

It is interesting to see "Motel 6" and "good place to stay" in the same sentence.

Motel 6 is often, but not always, a less expensive place to stay than other motels in the same area.

Unfortunately, that which is "less expensive" is not necessarily a "good value."

Stephe, you might want to bid on Priceline for a hotel in the area you want to visit. You can often get a good deal on a 3 or 4* hotel that is far better than a Motel 6. Good luck

There's a Motel 6 in Hollywood that's not bad, I'm not sure if they have car parking or not. It's a lot closer to Santa Monica than the others that you mention.

I would suggest you get a map of the greater Los Angeles area, so you can see for yourself the different areas.

As I already said, I'd worry less about the exact motel chain name then it's location. You're asking about places that will literally take you hours on the freeway to get to where you really want to be in the 1st place.

I wish I knew a $75/night motel in LA to suggest, but I'm afraid I do not.

Hi Stephe,

I stayed in a motel 6 ONCE and would not ever do it again even if it was free. Also, the 1st street property in Santa Ana sounds like a tough neighborhood. Also, in either location you mentioned you are far from Hollywood and the beach. Go to tripadvisor.com and look for hotels there as you will get real reviews from real people to help you make a choice. As far as Best Western is concerned the quality can vary a great deal so once again tripadvisor.com is of great value.Also would advise you to get a map of LA. Very LARGE city with serious traffic!

The LAX hotel options or somewhere in Culver City are both better ideas than staying down in Santa Ana, etc. (see other thread).

The few Motel 6s I've stayed at were perfectly fine. Just don't expect the amenities that a 3-star and up hotel give you. It's called MOTEL 6 for a reason.

The call it Motel 6 because it originally cost $6 a night to stay there, which is the right price.

I'd use Priceline or Hotwire. You need to do a bit of homework, but you have time to learn how they work.

For example, if I punch in 6/6 to 6/13 on Hotwire, there's a 3.5* hotel in Downtown LA for $79 + fees/taxes a night.

Betterbidding.com is down right now, but one can get an educated guess from their database what hotel it may be. But whatever it is, it'll be 10x better than Motel6, though you may have to pay for parking.

i think i looked at nearly every affordable hotel and motel in LA... or nearly! i'm really tired, now. but i'm still hesitating. at least i still have some time but it's hard selecting a hotel because i don't know which areas are safe or unsafe. what about the rancho park golf course area?
