Everyone is talking about the best cities in the country, the best this and the best that. What about those that are overrated. Let's keep it to big cities. I think we've heard enough about the Dells and Gatlinburg.

1. Las Vegas
2. Denver
3. Atlanta
4. Orlando
5. Milan, Italy (compared to rest of Europe, it is soooo bland)

I'll preface this by saying these are all cities I've visited and wanted to leave due to unbearable heat, noise, or odor (you can probably figure out which trait goes with which):

-Dallas, the city that tries! Tries to be New York, tries to be LA but comes off with a bunch of rude, pretentious people

-San Diego, why does everyone like this city so much? Dirty, ugly with lots of scary people around!

-Atlanta, when one of the suggestions of things to do in the city is to ride the public transportation, you know you've got nothing.

Salt Lake City, beautiful scenery but ugly people.

Most overrated city in the US has to be Las Vegas. A close second: Boston.

I can't understand the earlier nomination for San Diego, however - it's one of the most pleasant cities in our country by far.

Boston overrated???? By whom? Just weather grumps and people who think old means useless. Certainly not sports fans, museum goers, music lovers, theater fans, history buffs, students, sailors, and so on and so on.

What about Atlanta? Once you've seen a big Coke bottle and CNN, that's about it.

As for Boston, it may be a bit overrated. Keep in mind that by overrated, we mean relative to how much credit it is given.

Of course Boston is way better than, say, Atlanta. But I agree that it doesn't always live up to all it's billing.

To the original poster: why do you say Milan is overrated? No one I know, and no travel resources I've ever seen rate Milan as a great tourist destination.

I've only flown in and driven out, but everyone knows it's an industrial and fashion design center, not a tourist center.

Regarding Boston...
we in the Boston area understand your high expectations. The city is tough to get around and see with the plethora of building cranes and construction stuff from the Big Dig.
Let's see, $14 billion and counting, 280 million residents in the US...that's $50 a head.
Another example of your tax dollars working for us.

But hey, we've had one idiotic administration after another since just about the time I knew what a president was.....

How 'bout WashingtonDC, not because it isn't a great city to visit but because allowing ourselves to be governed by those people is so overrated?

Have to disagree about Austin...It has more music clubs than per person than any other city..and Miami has wonderful attractions nearby like the Everglades, Florida Keys and South Beach

Unless noise was reason you hated Austin...Among foreign cities, I'd like to nominate Amsterdam because it is filled with rude shopkeepers and drugged out American college students during the summer
