Monterey/San Francisco

Looking for help. Have 10 days planned in San Fran/Sonoma/Pt.Reyes area beginning June 27. Playing/staying Pebble Beach Fri/Sat a.m. with friends (50th birthday trip) and then have to to be in San Fran Sunday night for red eye outto east coast. Any suggestions on where to stay that Sat. Night? Many places require two nights during this time of year. We would be willing to stay any place in between Monterey and San Fran but not the city since we will have stayed there earlier in the trip. Any place along the coast, quiet. It is just for 4 of us.

Unfortunately, the Tickle Pink is likely one of those places that require a two-night stay. Your only choices on the coast are Aptos/Santa Cruz, or Half Moon Bay. How about the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay? Half Moon Bay is a lovely little town with beach, excellent dining, cute main street, etc. The only problem is it's often fogged in even when the "other side of the mountain" isn't. That's true of the whole coast, though.

Hi,
I second the Aptos/Santa Cruz posting, the Ritz is really nice, but it can be a bit pricey (for my tastes at least).

I would suggest B&Bs along the way somewhere in the Santa Cruz area:

We stayed at the Tickle Pink Inn last month for one night on a Fri. night, our room was around $289/night here. This was our second stay here, it's a great place!

Check out the Highland's Inn next door, we have also enjoyed several nice stays there. ***kim***

The Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay looks wonderful but very pricey. I am checking on discounted rates through some sites. Any suggestions? Rooms are around $399 a night through their website.
I have e-mailed the Tickle Pink Inn and am waiting for a response.

The Ritz Carlton in HMB is very expensive (you can't drive in to even look around without a reservation and/or paying $10 fee to park). You can however, opt to stay at the Best Western Hotel on Hwy 1. It will be half the price, but still clean and at least a 3 stars on most rating scales. It has a pool, gym, jacuzzi, outdoor garden area and spacious rooms with balconies (most have view of the golf course). You can drive or walk towards the Ritz Carlton and take a look at the beach. It has great views of the pricier hotel without the price! I also suggest taking advantage of the less crowded beaches further south on Hwy 1. There are too many to even list. All rank high up on my list and are so much better than the state beaches in town. You will come across Pigeon Point Light House and if you continue, Ano Nuevo State Reserve (perfect for walking, photography, bird watching, picnic lunches). Be sure to pack your food and drinks. There are only a few fruit stand along the way, and they might not be open for business. Shop and fill up with gas ahead of time in HMB. Just past Ano Nuevo will be Santa Cruz. Your possibilities are endless!

Have lunch at Duarte's cafe in Pescadero. Don't skip the pie!

Sorry, forgot to mention... HMB is about a 30 minute drive on a good day (week day). It can be a bumper-to-bumper situation on weekends. Both Hwy 92 and Hwy 1 get backed up because HMB and Pacifica are popular day trips for locals and tourists alike. There is one more (scenic) route you can take. Hwy 1 to Hwy 84 (San Gregorio, which is also a good beach area). Both Hwy 92 and Hwy 84 head west towards Redwood City and Palo Alto. Google San Mateo and check out the map. SFO is right off Hwy 101, and both of these areas will lead you to Hwy 101.

Thanks everyone! I will check out the Best Western Hotel on HWY1. The Ritz looks fabulous but very pricey especially at the end of a long trip and much expense. Any other considerations in case the BWH is booked?
