Monterey and Napa

Would like to ask for advice: family of four flying in to SFO airport, arriving Friday 1000 (0ctober) and departing Friday 1100 pm. Wants to start with Monterey, and Napa, what route to take for scenic views and where to stay.

Take Hwy 1 down to Monterey and back for the scenic views, through Half Moon Bay.

Highway 1, between San Francisco and Santa Cruz is definitely the scenic route you won't want to miss.

If you want to see redwoods, a good alternative to touristy Muir Woods is Henry Cowell Redwood State Park, seven miles north of Santa Cruz.

If your children are interested in California history, Sonoma has a interesting historic district.

Healdsburg has a delightful town square.

Only four days? Forget Napa and concentrate on Monterey, Carmel and the northern part of Big Sur.

Scenic drive: from SFO 101S to 92W to CA1S
