Trip Report Moms and Kids Catalina Island - Mini Trip Report

Visiting California from Atlanta, I planned an outing for my friend and I, her two kids (11 and 13) and my three kids (12,9,6)

Ferry over Friday morning from Dana Point was a bit rocky but fun.

We arrived and walked down to Pavillion hotel. Wonderful service, lovely gardens, central location that never felt noisy. Super wine and cheese and great breakfast complimentary. Rooms were basic but pleasant (more basic than price might suggest but the rest makes up for it). The outdoor spaces, great service and great location make it worth it.

Late lunch at Metropole - yummy , fresh, lots of veg options

We really felt AWAY, the light, the air, it all felt different. Took a quick swim at the beach. Cold, busy but fun.

Dinner at the Sandtrap (full from wine and cheese we needed a walk). Sort of a snack bar with $1 Taco happy hour! We felt like we were off the tourist trail.

Lots of ice cream shops. Everyone had fun just walking aorund, seeing the boats, the water...lying around nice lounge chairs at hotel.

Next day took a hike, checked out botanical gardens, walked down to Descanso Beach Club. Beach club a bit loud and crowded, perhaps more fun if we'd gone earlier. No reservations for zipline or rock climb available... next time we'll plan ahead.

Dinner at Portofino...a bit fancier than we'd planned but we were in the mood. Everyone very nice to our party of kids! Kids had great manners and enjoyed good Italian food and Shirley Temples.

It was getting a bit rowdier on Saturday night. More so and it would have gone too far but it kept in check.

I liked how lots of different people seemed to be about, families, singles, didn't just seem like one type. With 80% of Island as conservancy it felt like nature was close by. Not quite the South of France but even with all the tourist shops, there was a beautiful life feel.....
