We drove from NYC and hit horrible traffic in the late afternoon on a Fri so keep that in mind.
Don't know about alternative transportation but go to their website and see if they have suggestions..they should have something for NYers!
We thought it was clean and pleasant, a lot of non-smoking areas which is always a treat in any casino. Did not find the games to be great, the usual, but no one I know has come away saying they won much..
Did not stay there, we stayed at the other one over night, cannot remember the name (that one had gorgeous rooms but horrible casino) but husbands nephews stay there often and like it. They are fussy so that might mean the rooms are nice
There are several restaurants, we ate at the casual ones ( diner?) most often..for just a day, we were not interested in the big dining experience ( we did that at the other casino too)..
When are you going? We went in the fall and it was such a pretty drive, once off the highways, the trees were changing ..Have fun!

There are a lot of bus trips from NY (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Flushing) advertised on the local radios. The Mogan sun web site has schedule info.

When you factor in the casino voucher, I think they are basically free buses. Never taken one, so I can't comment.

You can take Metro North and pick up the bus at White Plains. Dattco bus service runs twice a day and is very convenient. Better than going to AC IMHO. I think they also have buses from Port Authority. I don't know what you are looking for but it's nothing to be blown away by. The hotel is the best in the area (indoor pool and spa too). The restaurants cater to the NYers and not the locals.

I guess that what I'm expecting from Mohegan Sun is a Vegas style resort, only larger and more self contained. Someplace that has enough things to do to keep you busy for a day or two, without going out (like lots of restaurants, shops, spa, gym, entertainment, gambling, etc).

No, I don't think it is near being a Vegas style resort. We stayed for a full day, did not see a show, left and felt like we had seen it all.
We stayed overnight at Foxwoods and left early in the day, having done all that was interesting there.
But, it as been over a year since we were there, perhaps there is a difference now.

Agree with Scartlett. It's not in the same league with Vegas. There's a little bit of shopping but not much. And there's a spa. We ate at Lucky's and maybe, Summer Shack. Both were decent but not particularly memorable. The room was amazing but it had to be an upgrade, guess we just got lucky.

I don't like gaming here any more because they don't have a poker room. Last time, I saw a concert at Mohegan and stayed there, but drove over to Foxwoods to gamble. BJ rules are decent, I think they allow surrender, and there is a smoke free section which is nice.
