MOAB to LAKE POWELL best route please
Hi,
I am going to be in Moab for a 2nd time later this year and would like to drive to the Needles district and Lake Powell. What is the best route to go to Lake Powell from Moab and how long is the drive? should we stop on the way?
Many thanks,
Angie

It is 340 miles from Moab to the Needles District of Canyonlands and then on to Lake Powell at Page, AZ
Make sure you stop at Newspaper Rock State Historical Park which is on your way to the Needles District on Hwy 211.
If you had the time I would spend a night in Gouldings (220 miles traveled) and visit Monument Valley.
Just off of Hwy 160 is Navajo National Monument.
If you want a shorter drive you can take Hwy 98 into Page, but if you want a more scenic route then take Hwy 160 all the way to Hwy 89 to Page. This route will add 55 miles to the above mileage.

Hi Delph,
Hey, Utahtea, for once I have to disagree with you. Last time I visited Moab and Canyonlands last May, I camped in the Needles District campground. The drive from Moab to the campground took about 2 hours. I don't have my map handy, but it couldn't be more than about 120 miles. Were you thinking roundtrip?

Dayle,
From Moab, Utah to Canyonlands, Needles District is only 75 miles. My mileage was from Moab to Page, AZ with a side trip to Canyonlands, Needles District which was what delph17 has asked for.
Last time we were in the Needles District we were lucky enought to grab the last campsite #13!

Hi Utahtea,
Boy was I tired last night! As I re-read your post I got it.
Did you do some hiking in the area south of the campground? When I was there it was too hot for long hikes, but it looked like there were some really good ones!

Hi Dayle,
Many years ago we did the Cave Spring trail and the last time we were there in May 2001 we did the Pothole Point and Slickrock trails.
In 1995 we rented a jeep just outside the entrance of the Needles District and got our permit and drove to Angel Arch. It was a beautiful sunny warm day and that place was fantastic and we had a blast!
That was the last year that they allowed vehicle traffic on the Salt Creek Trail. It was a last minute whim and we are so glad we decided to do it that year! I would never be up to hiking the 13 miles.
