Moab Tenting end of Oct?

2, 3, 4, or 5 of us in early 70's are considering a trip to Moab sometime during the last 2 weeks of October ... probably will be in/near about Moab 4 days/5 nights. Objectives: sightseeing and moderate hiking & bicycling and, like Jack Benney, trying to be 39.
If just me and my friends go we'll probably tent (dry camp or serviced campground), if wives go too we'll probably motel it.

Questions:
Is the weather at that time frequently conducive to tenting and outdoor activities? (Cold is easier to deal with than downpours)
At that time of year, are most campsites near town open & available? Any recommendations if we tent it?
If we motel it, any recommendations? (not into luxury on this trip, just clean and comfortable - we'll leave 3* & 4* accommodations for other times)

Wife and I spent a couple days climbing in Moab a few years back on a road trip. We tent camped right on the Colorado River just Southwest of town and a site. We were one of two tents in the site. I believe it was Fall time. Camp was 50 yards off the main road and right on the river. One of the most memorable camp experience I have had

There is a string of National Forest campgrounds on 128, between Moab and Arches NP.

Plenty of campsites. Shouldn't be rainy. Will be coooold. (not January cold, but cold) NOTE--if you are going October 20-23 that is fall break for all Utah schools. It will be a freaking zoo in Moab. I hope you are going the week after. (I am taking my kids to Vernal in an effort to avoid the chaos)

I hear good things about the Gonzo Inn. I really like the Moab Lodgings website--they have apartments in town for good rates and you get more space plus a kitchen.

Thanks Stanton
We're used to cold - ski all winter - much easier to handle than heat. Thanks for the alert about school break - that's the likely period we HAD planned, now will do a quick shift. And thanks for both websites

Just know--that all the Utah parks will be full during that time. So stay out of Southern Utah for those 4 days unless you like hordes of families. (I say as someone who will be part of that horde)

DW and I visited southern Utah in early November a few years ago. We stayed a few nights at the Robbers Roost motel in Green River which was cheaper than anything in Moab.
We did see a campground less than half full in Arches.
The weather was beautiful.
We also saw a campground in Goblin Valley SP which would work if you also wanted to go to Capitol Reef.
For a good lunch you can't beat the Moab Diner.

We have tent camped in Moab in mid October and it was VERY comfortable. Hot during the days in fact.

I second the suggestion of the Moab Diner. That is just a fun place we never pass up when in town.
