For those of you who have lived in the area all of your life maybe you can answer this question. Many years ago there was a breakfast/pancake house on Mission Blvd. I believe you come down Grand Ave. turn left and it was on the right hand side. Somewhere across from the Catamaran Hotel. This was actually back in the late 60's. I am sure it has either changed hands or not longer of course is what it was all of those years ago. Does anyone know? I keep thinking if was "Uncle somethings house of pancakes." It was not a chain like IHOP or Denny's.

I will try to look next time I go by there - but think it's gone. Newer brew pub, etc - is roughly in that spot now.
One "new" place that people seem to stand in line for is the Broken Yolk. http://www.yelp.com/biz/broken-yolk-cafe-san-diego
Thanks. I know there is a S.D lady who use to be on these boards, named "Barbra." I know she had remembered a lot of things from the olden days. I use to swiw at la jolla cove before the seals took it over. S.D was my old stomping grounds. or shall I say my "young" stompting grounds. The seals first began appearing there 40 plus years ago once in awhile. Oh the good ole days.
Hi diann,
I lived in P.B. in the late 60's early 70's and I can't remember the restaurant your talking about either. There was the Mission Restaurant and Saska's in Mission Beach. There was also a little cafe near the Pacific Beach Pier that served breakfast (but it's changed hands). Just FYI, regarding the La Jolla Cove - it has always been home to sea lions (they are still there) according to the lifeguards. Now they are starting to see a few of the seals from The Children's Pool which is the beach which is now closed to swimmers because of the seals.
Nanabee, oh yes I remember Saska's in Mission Beach. They were open for breakfast after bars closed and the bar folks would go there for breakfast after 2a.m. I know I was there a few times.LOL. No listen if the lifeguards feel this way about the childrens pool how old are they?? I am referring way back to like 47 years ago. There is a wall to walk out to and the waves crash on it. We use to walk out on it all the time, and once in rare while you would see a sea loin giving birth to her baby on that beach. No one would believe my friends and I when we would say we saw this on that beach. I use to swim there with my family--I am going way back I know I have made frequent visits and it is unbelievable how it is the seals home now. But trust me 40 plus years ago it was not at all. thanks for the info.
Here is a link to the Pacific Beach Historical Society. They may be able to answer your question.

What a great site. I have emailed them my question. Hopefully they will respond. Thanks Michelle.
I haven't been to Saska's in years so I was thrilled that it's still there! Quite a few memories! Here's the web site for anyone interested.

The historical site tells me the name was Uncle Susie's pancake house. How could I have forgotten that?? This is what my GF recalls it being as well. Uncle Susie's.
Is that the spot that later became Krishna Mulvaneys?
I don't know I do not live in S.D anymore was there for a visit 2009. I was raised there then moved away in my early 20's. It was always difficut to move back to that area.
hi diann,
yes that must have been the Children's Pool back in the day when it was open for swimming. The "pool" now is where the seals have moved in. The La Jolla Cove, according to the life guards, is home to sea lions not seals. I, of course, never knew this but they started decribing the differences between the two so I take their word
Saska's still has great steaks/food and they have a sushi/seafood place next door. The Mission Grill? on Mission - back in the 80's had super breakfasts - but it too is gone.
As for the huge seal colony that has completely taken over the Children's pool - some dummies who don't really understand nature have made it a cause not to disturb them and they are completely guarded - and again, have completely taken over Children's pool.
I love nature - but the seals can find any number of beaches to raise their young - and IMO - can co-exist with others at the beaches - but not in the eyes of some "informed folks".
nanabee, oh my mistake I just meant those sea loins not really differentiating between the seals versus sea loins. But whenever I visit S.D I always go to La Jolla and walk the wall where they are at I have a picture of me on the beach with them.(2009) Not sure they are so unfriendly. They seem fine and use to people. I had just assumed lifeguards were youngins and would think in there young 20 something years they were always there. They were not when I was a young girl 47 years ago we swam there and never saw a seal/or sea loin--only one time late at night and people thought my friends and I were drinking at the beach when we said we saw a mother giving birth to her babies. My Mother accused me of drinking on the beach again and my GF and I were amazed in the dark what we could see. They just barely then began taking over the area. (childrens pool.) back then 47 years ago. I am now close to 63. I was 16 then and younger when I swam there. Well a litle history for you all. I am not sure where the cove is located and I did not know they were home to the sea loins for years and years. take care.
From the Childrens pool - you would just walk along the ocean (north) maybe a quarter mile - and where the sidewalks/next to the grassy area - and just beyond Boomers (great body surfing beach) - it turns right - and then you are walking along one side of the Cove, one of the most beautiful places there is. Good for swimming (they have a lifeguard stand), snorkeling, diving, kayaking, whatnot. http://www.a-zsandiegobeaches.com/lajollacove.htm
diann: to have witnessed a birthing is amazing - if only we'd had cell phone cameras back in the day!
Saw a Kudu like antelope giving birth at the SD Zoo. Pretty impressive - even for one who grew up with some animals in the acres behind the home. And once saw a bunch of German Tourists down the beach in Costa Rica gathered around a turtle laying an egg, all oohing and awing.

Later - at my sister's ocean front palapa type place in Nicaragua, it became old hat.
