Minnesota & Wisconsin in September our first visit please help us plan
We are thinking of a driving adventure to Minnesota & Wisconsin for this September. This would include tent camping and our dog. Would early September be a good time to do this trip weatherwise? Never have been to either state before.
We need some help with planning and would appreciate ideas of must see places. We love nature, history and the outdoors. Great places to tent camp would also be appreciated. Thanks

It's kind of out of the way, but The Boundary Waters of Minnesota are just beautiful...very relaxing and quiet. Ely is a charming little town. There are also some gorgeous spots along Lake Superior as you head northeast out of Duluth.

Labor Day weekend is the last "big" weekend for summer activities. If you're thinking of camping at this time you'd better make reservations ASAP.
After Labor Day things really slow down--weather can be beautiful. But--we've been in Northern WI during the 4th of July weekend and it could get pretty cold at night (frost).

A drive south from St. Paul/Minneapolis along the Mississippi River will take you to the scenic town of Red Wing and to Frontenac State Park- which has really sweet campsites, wide open areas for birdwatching, and beautiful vistas of bluffs along the river.

The North Shore of Minnesota is beautiful and has many campgrounds that are on or near Lake Superior. Grand Marais has a campground, RV Park right on the harbor in town and has lots of restaurants, shops, etc. You also can go up the Gunflint Trail into the BWCA which is beautiful. The weather does get cooler in Sept. but they can have some beautiful days. Labor Day weekend is a big end of the year time for campers and all tourists so you need to make reservations in advance for that weekend. If you have more questions just ask and I will try to give you more info as I know the area well.
