We are from CA but always ski at Lutsen Mtn. in Lutsen, MN when we are there over the holidays. It has some nice long runs and we love it. They have gotten some decent snow already this year so skiing should be great. Have fun!!

Definitely Lutsen. It's touted as the largest ski area east of the Mississippi. I have NO idea whether that's true or not (and don't care) but it is very nice, has runs that drop up to 3000', great views of Lake Superior while you're skiing, and very nice facilities and rates.

Yea, I saw they supposedly got 20" of new snow this past weekend. When we were there about 3 yrs ago, we got over 40" the week we were there.

Per the Lutsen Mountain website, their vetical drop is only 825', which is greater than anything in Wisconsin.

Spirit Mountain is also good. It has the greatest vertical drop of any resort in MN.

We have skied Spirit Mtn. but don't think it has as much to offer as Lutsen. One advantage tho is it is right outside Duluth if you want to be closer to a larger city. Lutsen is really beautiful and the runs are fun and some are quite challenging.

Did you consider Upper Michigan Peninsula?

Beware - any midwestern skiing in JAN will be VERY COLD! Bring your best cold weather clothes.

Another vote for Lutsen. I grew up skiing in the Midwest and have also skied Wis. and many places in the UP.

Lutsen is lovely, has a variety of terrain unlike any other place in the Midwest and gets very good snow -- although the UP can be a bit better in some years.

Spirit Mountain isn't Lutsen, but if you're spending a night in Duluth coming or go -- a surprisingly fun town to visit -- it's not a bad way to spend a day.

Heed the warning about the cold.

Thanks for the information. Love Duluth and love the Lutsen area.
