My flight from LAX is going to arrive at HNL 12:06 PM and I wonder if I should book the 12:50 pm flight of Hawaiian Ailine to Maui. My arriving gate is probably #22 and Hawaiian airline's boarding gates are at #50+.

Assuming my flight from LAX will not be late - do I have enough time to walk/run from #22 to #50? Is security check required along this route?

I called Hawaiian airline customer support but they are located in Manila so the guy I spoke to does not have real experience. Their rule book recommends 75 mins for transfer. I want to catch the 12:50 flight because it allows me to get to my destination earlier and at the same time it's cheaper.

Whether or not you have to go through security, you do have to wait for your bags (unless you only have carryon?). I think it's way too tight personally.

You will have to change terminals in Honolulu. Your mainland flight lands at the International terminal, and the Hawaiian Airlines flight leaves from the Inter-Island terminal. You can either walk, or take the wiki-wiki bus, which is usually waiting curbside. The good news is, you don't need to go through Security again. If United is checking your bags all the way through, you can probably make it IF.. you are not seated in the rear of your United flight, your United flight is on time, and you move fast! If you have to reclaim your bags in Honolulu, you will definitely need more time!

IF you go carry-on only OR have your luggage checked thru AND your flight lands on time, you could make it. No you don't need to exit and reenter secured space, but do have to change terminals as already clarified above.

What the next flight time? And how much is the additional cost?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I should have said I would NOT check in bags.

Barbara: are the international and inter-island terminals in the same building? How long it takes to walk from one to the other (I am in 40s and a quick walker)?

Suze: The next flight is 1:09 PM costing $129 ($60 more than the 12:50 flight) and then no economy class flight until 3:03PM. Go! airline has a 1:50 flight to Maui costs $68 but it arrives in Maui one hour later then HA's 12:50 flight.

I only stay 6 nights in HI spliting between Maui and Kauai and I do not want to waste 1+ hours in HNL.

The two terminals are separate buildings, but are next to each other and connected by walkways.
If you aren't loaded down with carry-ons, the walk is about 10 minutes. It can be more pleasant to walk and feel those tropical breezes than to crowd into the wiki-wiki bus. When you get to the Interisland terminal, you go down the escalator to the departure area.
Keep in mind that your luggage might not make the shorter connection. If you have a travel companion, one of you can wait for the luggage and the other can go get the rental car.

Are you booking separate tickets, LAX-HNL and HNL to Maui, or is this all on one ticket?

If it is the former, your are seriously SOL if you miss your connecting flight. You would also need to checkin on Hawaiian by their required checkin time (you could do this online before leaving LAX if they allow it, and you would need to be at the gate 15min prior to departure, or 12:35 else they could call you a no-show and give the seat away. Then you'd have to buy a new ticket HNL to Maui.

If it is all on one ticket and 1st flight is delayed, you would be accommodated on the next available flight.

Their rule book 75 minutes is not a recommendation - it's the legal transfer time. If you book a time shorter than that on separate tickets and don;t make it you will have to buy tickets for the next flight (if they have tickets) at whatever price they have left.

Go ahead if you like living on the edge.

It's a crap shoot, but without checked bags, and if your first flight arrives on time, you should be fine. Personally I hate to have an anxiety attack, so would probably allow the longer time for the connection, but that's just me!
