Michigan Upper Peninsula

We're considering a trip this Spring/Summer to the U.P. of Michigan. Having only been to the Soo Locks and back once, I was wondering what other must-sees there are within a 4 - 6 hour drive from the bridge. We'll have two small children with us and we plan on staying in hotels. We're open to touristy stuff and scenery...anything but flea markets and craft fairs. Also any recommendations on *nice* hotel/motels to stay - price is not a criteria.

Ignoring Mackinac Island and the many attractions just south of the Bridge...

Tahquamenon Falls.

Cut River Bridge - just a few minutes stop to let the kids go down to the river and back and get some exercise

Whitefish Point - light house, museum, agate hunting and tremendous spring bird migrations.

Grand Marais - interesting little town and nearby sand dunes.

Munising and the Pictured Rocks

Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Fayette State Park and ghost town/mining community.

Those are within a 2 hour drive.

Give the Mystery Spot a pass. I went there as a child and was disgusted with the place.

Thanks for the great tips, Keith, many I wasn't familiar with. Regarding South of the bridge, I am a metro-Detroiter and have been to Mackinac several times and many of the other great spots in the Northern lower peninsula....

I took my kids to Munising for a week last summer. (12,7,3yrs) We stayed at Yogi Bear, Jelly Stone Park and they had a great time. They do rent cabins with a Queen bed and set of bunk beds.I checked one out and they are clean and even have a firelplace, only you would have to use the community bathrom with the other campers. No big deal, it depends on what you like, but you can have a campfire, and there is a picnic table with the cabin too like the other sites. So, it would be like camping without so much work. If you want a cabin with a bathroom there are some nearby cabin rentals/motels on the same road nearby. I think that the campsite wa like 55-60 a night and the other place, I cant remember. If you go, take your kids on the nature trails to access the beach, its a bit of a hike, but worth it. Take a backpack or two with your things for a day at the beach. A lunch and towels/swimwear. There is a swimming pool and acitvities for the kids, (laundry room,gift/convenience store), . Close to town and we were busy every day. I'm not at all sporty and had a three year old with us but we went hiking, biking on a nearby island, boat tour, swimming and canoeing.
