We are traveling from Chicago to eventually PA, but have never been to the state of MI. Thought about stopping in for a brief visit. We enjoy moderate hiking and exploring and will have about 3 days, Nov. 1-3. Should we go see Mackinaw Island?, or somewhere else? Don't really want to go any further north than Mackinaw.

By November most of the businesses and attractions on Mackinac Island are closed and the color is gone. The latest I would recomend going there is the third weekend in October.
For your dates, I would do the Lake Michigan shore to Traverse City. TC would make a good base for doing wineries, the Mission & Lelenau Peninsulas, Charleviox, Petoskey, Sleeping Bear sand dunes, etc.

Thanks for your in put. Any particular hike or trail? I looked on weather.com and it says average temps that time are 49 but should I expect cooler since it's near the water and maybe breezy?? Any thoughts?
I'm afraid I am more of a biker than a hiker. I would like to bicycle the Lelenau Peninsula at that time.
Near the water will not necessarily be colder at that time of year, particularly at night. The water holds on to the heat into the fall and keeps things more temporate.
