Miami or the Key's for Spring Break
We have a 16 year old daughter. She will bring a friend. What is a more enjoyable spring break trip - Miami or the Key's? I don't know what either really offer but only sitting on a beach will kill me. If the Key's, what key?
Any input and advise on this wide open question is appreciated.

Beaches in Key West are pretty poor. So if that's important, scratch it off list.
Miami will have more options of things to do with 16 y.o. girls.
How long is this trip? What interest do you and the girls have? Would Orlando be of more interest to them as many "Spring Break" activities tend to center around alcohol. I am guessing your use of the term simply means a school break in Spring.

Miami definitely, and you should plan to stay in Miami Beach, preferably in the Deco district. There is a huge cool factor and lots to do.
The girls are likely to want to go out by themselves, and you are going to have to have a lot of confidence in them or figure out a way to chaperone unobtrusively, but this would be true in either place. Neithrr is a high school or college spring break place.
If this makes you nervous and you are rolling in money, you could stay in Key Biscayne or Bal Harbour.
Miami is very multicultural. My wife says that like Quebec, it is as close as you can be to going overseas but without any of the hassles. I took a wonderful photograph of a woman in a burka strolling down the beach past South Americans in very brief bikinis. Not much like most of our home towns.

The Keys are more of a party place for drinkers, with many old town inns in Key West refusing under 18s and requiring multi-night bookings. there is not really a spring break crowd for them to hang with...
...but the girls will probably like the "vibe" of South Beach... lots of shopping, beach activity, action on Ocean Drive and noise from clubs...

There are a lot of visitors from South America here in South (EAST) Florida which could explain some of the bathing attire mentioned above.
BTW if the kids tell you they want to go to Haulover Beach, suggest a Disney movie.
There's a lot of glitz and all that goes with it in the South beach neighborhood; a lot of the places such as here in Fort Lauderdale have very STRONGLY discouraged the so-called "Spring Break" groups; Miami is really an almost other world and you should experience it at least once.

I've never been to the Keys but I love Miami. Cool hotels, lots of dining choices, shopping, great big beach. I love he Latino feel to it too.
(However I'm not sure about what a previous poster said- the girls wanting to go out on their own. I don't think I'd be comfortable with that and not even sure where they would go as they are underage by 5 years)
