Our flight from Ecuador to Miami arrives at 11:30 pm so by the time we get through customs it will be quite late. We have to spend the night, then fly out the next afternoon. I don't want to go too far from the airport but I also don't want to settle for a budget hotel.
We have stayed at the hotel within the airport - it was years ago, maybe it's changed but I wasn't too keen on it and don't think I'd want to try it again.
So does anyone recommend a hotel, maybe 4 star, that is not too far from the airport? I don't know if hotel shuttles run at all hours or if getting a taxi that late will be a problem. A hotel shuttle would be a definite plus.
Thanks in advance for any help!
p.s. yes, I did search the forum already on Miami airport hotel and got some info but I would like to know of any nicer hotels rather than just a basic, cheapy place to spend one night.
Miami airport hotel - would like a 4 star that's close to airport

Look at the Sofitel. Their shuttle runs until 2am.

Marriott Sheraton Westin
Marriott MIA for me last was fine $45 bidding priceline $80 reg

The closest thing to a true 4-star that I can think of in that area would be the Intercontinental Doral. And I agree that the Sofitel would be a good choice.
Thank you all!!
You can check out the Miami Hilton Airport hotel. It's a good choice as well.

Hilton on Blue Lagoon Drive is right across the airport on the other side of the expressway. Its a huge resort like hotel so its definitly not like the typical grimy airport hotels you see around MIA. If you've seen the movie "Up in the Air" you may recognize it as the movie was filmed at that hotel. Plus their onsite restaurants are great and you get a wonderful view of either downtown/MIA airport from a majority of the rooms.
Anyone know anything about another option - the Hyatt at the Blue in Doral? Sounds like that's not too far from the airport. No free shuttle though but I wonder if the other ones (Sofitel, for ex.) will even still be running by the time we clear customs. I guess it would still save money on the return trip the next day.
The Sofitel shuttle runs until 2 am
If you are willing to take a taxi, then look at
http://www.mandarinoriental.com/miami/
or
http://www.epichotel.com/
(closer than the Hyatt at the Blue)
I think we should be out by 2 am so I guess the Sofitel is the best deal.
The Mandarin Oriental & Epic look lovely but are a bit more than I want to pay for this one quit visit. Next time!
Thanks starrs
Sofitel and Hilton are your best bets....no idea why someone earlier suggested Mandarin Oriental- its super far from the Airport in Brickel Key-and island off the coast of downtown.
You can always check the Hilton's and Sofitel's website for their shuttle service information- but even if you have to take a taxi it shouldnt cost too much as both hotels are located across the highway from the airport (less than 5 minutes drive) on Blue Lagoon Drive.
"...no idea why someone earlier suggested Mandarin Oriental-"
Maybe if you read the thread you can figure it out.
first, sorry for the typo above, should've said quick visit not quit visit --
second, thanks for all of the advice - i booked at the sofitel.
glad that i had read here or on tripadvisor that the shuttle picks up from the depature level at the airport not arrivals - i asked about that when making my reservation and she said, oh yeah, that's true - but never had volunteered it herself.
Just follow the signs at the airport for hotel shuttles. It's well marked.
Practice what you preach starrs...they want a hotel not too far from the airport as stated in the OP.
