Memphis in 1 Day

We will be in Memphis for 1 day near the end of October (just a stopover on our way to another destination).

We know we want to see Graceland, but we are looking for other suggestions of must-do's in 1 day.

As far as Graceland we are not huge Elvis fans but we are interested in seeign Graceland just not spending all day there, how long do you think we would need to spend at Graceland?

Thank you for any suggestions you have.

Two ideas come to mind.
One is to go to Mud Island if it is still open for the season. You take a tram over which is kind of nice. The museum is wonderful. It takes a look at life on the Mississippi as far as our History is concerned, culture, war, etc`... But it is set up in a very interesting way. - Like you are on a boat in some cases...we enjoyed it. It may be too chilly to walk around Mud island though.
Do you like jazz? Even if you don't a walk down Beale is fun. It is closed off on weekends so you just walk around and experience the jazz, restaurants ( great BBQ) etc... It is very lively in the evenings.
The Pyramid there offers world class Exhibitions. You may want to check if there is anything tghere then. We have seen Treasures of Czars, Napolean, Artifacts from the British Museum, etc... They do an amazing job.
You may want to go to the martin Luther King Museum. It is at the Hotel where he was shot.
Oh, It might be fun to have a drink at the Famous Peabody Hotel and watch the famous ducks walk down the red carpet to their fountain - a tradition for many years. The Hotel is beautiful and has some veru nice shops.
Well, there are a few of my ideas. We llive about 4 hours away and sometimes go there on a whim for a weekend.

Here's what I would do:

Morning--Graceland (you shouldn't need more than a few hours if you don't want to linger on EVERY little detail)

Lunch--Rendezvous BBQ near the Peabody

Afternoon--Civil Rights museum--I consider this a MUST DO for Memphis. Very interesting and moving

Drink before dinner--Peabody Hotel--you can plan to arrive for the "duck ceremony" if you want to see that, then stay for a drink

Dinner/Jazz/General Craziness--Beale St.!!

I hope that helps! I loved our two day trip to Memphis. Stay downtown if you can, and take the trolley to the Peabody, CR Museum, Beale St. and back home. (You'll need a car or taxi to get to Graceland).

I'm a little disappointed with this years exhibition at the pyramid, but others may like it. After the treasures of Russia, Florence and Imperial China, this year we have "The Art of the Motorcycle". Eh. www.wonders.org

The other suggestions are excellent and should easily fill a day.

Just to be a little bit of a problem child - while jazz is available, that sound you're hearing on Beale is The Blues. New Orleans = jazz, Memphis = blues. But hey, the sign at the river says "Welcome to Memphis, home of the blues, birthplace of rock and roll". I can be nitpicky since I have supporting signage.

So, Welcome to Memphis.
