Memphis areas

Will be staying in Memphis for a few days in mid-June and have heard that some areas of Memphis are a bit unsafe. Can anyone tell me what areas to avoid and also not to stay in? Thanks for the info. gandb7

The best hotels in town are The Peabody, The Madison and the new Westin all of which are downtown on or near Beale St. If you want to visit Beale then I would stay at The Westin or The Peabody. There are some fine restaurants downtown. Stella is nice and Felicia Suzanne's is too. Grill 83 at The Madison is nice. I go to Memphis quite often and stay at The Hampton on Shady Grove. It's at a mid point between downtown and Germantown. Germantown is very nice. Nothing is safe anymore but Germantown is much safer than downtown and there's more to see and do at GT. You must decide what you want to do. If it's Beale St. then be careful late at night. Do your thing in the early afternoon and early evening. Encore is another great restaurant near Beale. Erling Jensen is the best restaurant in town IMO. Good luck. Don't be out late at night walking or driving.

We go to Memphis on a fairly regular basis and always stay downtown. We haven't been to the Westin yet, but have stayed the other places Ike mentions downtown (plus several others). Our one stay at the Peabody was very mediocre - the room was tiny and so was the bathroom. On the other hand, we LOVE their lobby/bar and wouldn't consider a trip to Memphis without at least one cocktail and some great people-watching.

Our current favorite hotel downtown is the Marriott Residence Inn. Not all rooms there are created equally, but the ones with the bed area that's elevated are really great (especially for people like me who get up at the crack of dawn and like to read without disturbing anyone). All rooms have fully equipped kitchens and the free breakfasts are good, too. It's just around the corner from the Madison (also lovely), and Stella and Felicia Suzanne's.

Unfortunately, downtown does have some panhandlers, but nothing worse than other cities.

If you stay in the downtown/Beale Street/touristy area, you should be fine. The exception to this: do NOT stay around Graceland. If you want to visit Graceland, you'll be fine, but the surrounding area is not safe to stay in.

I would have to disagree with Ike - Germantown is a very nice suburb, but if I were visiting I'd want to stay downtown, especially on a first visit. If you stay in well-populated tourist areas, especially at night, you should be fine. Just be smart about it.

Rewcently stayed downtown at the Sleep Inn (40 Front St. N). BTW, a nice hotel for the price. We never felt unsafe anywhere in the downtown area, even at night. A few panhandlers, but not worst than any other city. Have a good time. Memphis is a great city!

I have to disagree with downtown/Beale being unsafe, regardless of the time. If you stay in the "core" downtown area, it is very safe, even late at night. Police presense is overwhelming, so the thieves stay away. That being said, don't venture very far south of Linden, but other than that you'll be fine.

The Peabody is nice, but generally once you leave the lobby, the ambience is over. Though this time of year, decorated for Christmas, the lobby is awe inspiring. I will actually be staying at the Madison later this week, so I hope it will be very nice.

In the downtown area alone, there are several must sees, including the Civil Rights Museum, the Gibson Guitar Factory, Sun Studios, etc. Go see the Grizzlies in FedEx forum, a wonderful venue, if they're in town.
