Tomorrow morning dw and I take a 9am Megabus from DC to NYC. We stay at the Hilton Garden Inn near Madison Square Garden (which is actually round). Not a posh boutique hotel but it was cheap. Saturday afternoon we see the play, which is even more expensive than touring the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. Sunday morning we come home. This will be a short report because it's a short trip. Not like cold's compelling trip report on the inca trail. Not like jumping out of an airplane, but still pretty darned exciting. We're open to suggestions.
Megabus, NYC, 63 W 35th, Book of Mormon.

BTW, the first two Madison Square Gardens were on Madison Square hence the name.
Looking forward to another trip report from you. Have a great trip
Where are you going to eat Saturday night?
Tertulia is a spanish restaurant dw wants to go to. 359 6th ave. I don't know what kind of suggestions. Where can we meet real new yorkers? Just kidding. We'll probably just wander around and look at the tall buildings. Now we're on the bus. It's so exciting. Wi-Fi! I'll tell you what things we're passing. Right now it's a sign for the baltimore washington parkway. Boy, is this going to be a great trip report or what?
It's a great trip report!
Another idea is the West Bank Cafe. Here's a menu for you to peruse as you travel along. Be sure to notice their prix fixe options. Pretty much in between your hotel and your theater -

Enjoy your trip! We use Megabus too when we want to go to mid-town. Bolt bus is even nicer but Megabus has a free overnight lot at its White Marsh (near Baltimore)stop. The Baltimore Washington Parkway will be the most scenic part of your trip, so I hope you have taken it all in.
Leaving the turnpike, the light at the end of the tunnel will be Manhatten.
Make that Manhattan. My typing fingers have a mind of their own. Apparantly one that is none too bright.
Tertulia has gotten good reviews but we have not been there. If you are intersted in tapas you can also try Tia Pol, Despana (but only during the day) and Nai.
A fun place but with good food is Nom Wah. It is a dim sum restaurant that a nephew took over from his uncle. It has the original floor and ceiling but he updated the food a bit. It was the first dim sum we went to almost 40 years ago but the nephew has done a spectacular job with his changes.

Near Tertulia are two of NYC's great stores. Raffetto's probably makes the best cheapest store made pasta in the city. The will cut the pasta for you on a machine that was obsolete 50 years ago. The store is about 100 years old.
Then there is Joe's Dairy. A hole in the wall store that makes fabulous mozzarella and have been doing so for about 85 years.
Really cool suggestions! You all are the best!
Book of Mormon is worth every penny and a laugh a minute is no exaggeration.
We checked in, have a nice room on the 24th floor, $126/night before tax. Walked to the west bank cafe which was nice. Downstairs there's a theater/club where there's music or other performances at night. I had lasagna. Very tasty. Thanks starrs. Then on the way back we stopped at bryant park where I went ice skating. Skating is cheaper than skiing and there are no lift lines. That was fun. Now we're getting ready for dinner, hopefully at Tertulia (they don't take reservations) with cool pasta and cheese stores nearby. Bye for now.
glad you enjoyed the west bank cafe
Lol @ your skating report
If you want a cabaret or just some piano music after your show you may want to duck into don't tell mama's
More NYC tips! Yay!

Want to know what you think of Book of Mormon, though cdhrdh's comment is certainly encouraging!
In the past several weeks I've seen 4 comedies, and by far the worst, least funny one was "Book of Mormon." I sure don't understand the hype. I guess if you find the worst episodes of "South Park" to be funny, you may enjoy it.
Better options, in my opinion (and less expensive):
* "Silence! The Musical" if you are a fain of the movie "Silence of the Lambs"
* "The Complete and Condensed Stage Directions of Eugene O'Neill" if you are a fan of theater
* "Chinglish"
Enjoy NYC!
New York can be cold. Fortunately many places sell knit hats which will keep your head warm. $5.
Last night Tertulia was too crowded so our new yorker friend took us nearby to Snack Taverna which was very good. Then I mentioned looking for a cheese store and our friend took us to Murray's. We bought roncala and young manchego. Then back to the hotel.
This morning we went up to the top of Macy's (because it was there). Macy's is on Harold Square (which isn't square) and has old escalators with wooden treads which is pretty cool. We went to Tertulia's for lunch. Excellent. Then we went to Raffetto's to buy fresh cut tagliatelle (thanks Adu) and sauce for dinner when we get home tomorrow.
Then the book of Mormon. Truly shocking. For example, the word clitoris is bandied about. So it's great to finally know how that word is pronounced. Very funny play. If you're not sure if you'd like this play see Team America or an episode or two of South Park first.
Then back to the hotel, then out to a very good korean restaurant next to our hotel, then back to the hotel to my trip report. Tomorrow back to dc on megabus. I'm hoping for two seats in the very front row upstairs.

Sorry Gekko, I didn't see your post. I think there's redeeming social value in The Book and most south park shows but maybe not enough. We don't get to see many plays. We liked War Horse.
This morning we went to a breakfast place on times square filled with real new yorkers pretending to be tourists. Then we went to the Weegee exhibit at the Museum for International Photography. Then we went to a japanese bookstore, and then to catch our bus.
The line to get on megabus in nyc is pretty chaotic. I just recommended megabus to willit, who wanted to know how to get from nyc to dc. She's from england. I better warn her. She's expecting queues, not chaos.
Anyway, ride back was fun. Watched beginners, with Ewan McGregor and Mélanie Laurent which was completely unrealistic because they are both beautiful but don't say much. If I were that beautiful I'd be talking all the time.
People got off the bus and baltimore and we got to move up to the front row upstairs. I love the front row upstairs.
Sounds like you had a great time and made the most of it! I love NYC!
Glad you had a good time.
This is a post is a general notice, not picking on anyone in particular. In the past few months I keeping hear musicals referred to as PLAYS. The Book of Mormon is a musical, not a play! It won a Tony for Best MUSICAL. I hear this on TV too all the time. Did "musical" get taken out of the dictionary and replaced by play? Glad you enjoyed it-I thought it was absolutely brilliant and laughed my a** off (and I'm not a South Park kinda girl!).
Thanks. Skiergirl, you're upset with my comparison of skating and skiing aren't you?
A musical is a play with music used to advance the story (dictionary.com)
I am not familar with this megabus. How long does it take and how much? Is there also an option of a train? Comparison??
I hope we are coming to NY in late Aug. - Sept. Coming for the US Open. Maybe a side trip to DC too! Any info will be appreciated.
"Is there also an option of a train?"
www.amtrak.com is the train option.
The 2 best bus lines connecting NYC and DC are Megabus and Bolt bus. From downtown to downtown, I would give the edge to Bolt. Both require a reservation made online - you can try to just show up and if there is space on the bus you may be able to buy a ticket, but it is chancy. For the most part, the earlier the reservation, the cheaper the price. In theory, you can pay as little as $1 although I don't know of anyone who has bought one that cheap. I usually use Megabus just because of its convenience to Baltimore where it stops and has a free overnight lot - I usually make a reservation a week or so before the trip and last payed $19 each way, a fraction of the Amtrak price. The tolls to NYC recently increased to the price may have gone up a bit. It takes about 4 hours +- depending on traffic. Don't even consider the "chinatown" buses.
