I will be travelling to New York next month with my Mum (I'm 28)We can't afford anything grand but, would apprediate some advice on some reasonable hotels/aprtments which aren't too expensive. Any one got any suggestions? Also, general advice on visiting the Big Apple would be helpful. (we are staying for 10 days - Can't wait!)

Try the Hotel Beacon. Also, whatever hotels you do end up calling, ask if they have any special rates for a week or 10-day stay.
New York is a truly wonderful place to visit. I love it, and have a great time every time I go. Hit all of the regular tourists spot you'll read about in tour books, but don't bother going up into the Statue of Liberty. Stay off the subway during rush hour. Spend Saturday or Sunday afternoon (or both), wandering through Central Park, people watching.
Try the Days Inn on 8th Avenue at 48th Street. It is in the Times Square area. I got a rate of $109 there through a booking service called Express Hotel Reservations. They have a website http://www.express-res.com. The room was not luxurious, but clean and fairly large. Service at the hotel was good. Also, use the subway to get around the city during the day. You can buy a 7 day unlimited ride pass (good on buses as well) for $17.
try the new hotel on w 72--its either the comfort central pk or the quality inn --I think the former. Less than 100 a night, very cleani here, great residential neighborhood. Do a search for tons of great ideas. You will have a ball! great pizzeria down the block--pizza joint 2.
