May weather in Zion and Bryce

We've been to this area at this period of the year twice- it can start off chilly in the a.m. (especially if you go to Sunrise Point at Bryce to view the hoodoos when the sun comes up.) It warms up during the day. Think layers that you can easily peel during the day. My favorite outfit is a Drifit t-shirt with a Polartec fleece vest, quick-drying zip-off pants that convert to shorts, and hiking boots. Pre-dawn arisings may call for a long-sleeve tee and a coat, but the above outfit will serve you well for daytime hikes. Best advice- wear a hat. The sun gets fierce, and the high altitude/dry air can dehyrdrate you in a hurry. Hope this is helpful.

No problema - low 50's at night. consider Rosie's for accomodations at Bryce - great motel - very good meat and potatoes/breakfast diner right there. too.
Most of the snow will be gone by then - I've been there twice in April. You are going to love both parks!

Because of the elevation difference between Zion and Bryce, Zion can be quite hot by the middle of May while Bryce is mild.
I would expect temperatures at Zion in the high eighties, and even the low nineties during the day.
Be happy if it is cooler than that!
Bryce usually cools off more at night because it is higher and on the edge of the plateau.
(I was in Zion once in late May and the temperature was already pushing 100.)
Bryce is an average of 4,000 feet higher because at Bryce you are on the rim of the plateau while at Zion you are on the floor of the valley.
Based on atmoshpheric expansion alone, you expect some 12 - 14 degrees F difference in temperature.
(Figure on 3.1 to 3.5 degrees per vertical thousand feet based only on elevation change. It is based on 5.6 degrees C of temperature change per vertical kilometer. )

It's so hard to plan on what to take anywhere during spring months.
Bob said he was in Zion and the temps were hitting 100 in mid-May and I believe him. In 1975 we left Bryce to go to Zion on Memorial Day weekend and it was snowing in both Bryce and Zion.
Bring layers of clothes and do have something warm to wear. Also bring your shorts!
