Maui with a baby

My wife and I love Maui and are expecting our first baby in
September. We are planning to come to Maui when he/she
is 9-10 months old. We have always stayed at the Royal
Lahaina (because it has without a doubt the best beach in
West
Maui), but this time we plan to change. We plan to stay in
the busier Kaanapali Beach area because we want to be close
to restaurants, shops, places to walk with the baby etc. We
are considering all the big hotels...Sheraton, Westin,
Marriott, Hyatt....I'm looking for opinions on which is best
for us given our circumstances. We want a nice beach..a pool
where we can play with the baby and a resort that is
generally baby-friendly and where the rooms are excellent at
the least.
Help! And please, I know there are lots of condos on
Maui...we want to stay at a hotel in this area. Thanks in
advance.
Jeff

I'll be honest with you. I never was impressed with the Kanaapali area and we checked it out a couple of nights. The beach area seemed very narrow and not that safe in spots. I'd be tempted to stay in Wailea It is so much more classy than the above area. Maybe the Kea Lani if money is no object. Feel free to contact me for more info. I'm sure I could help. Anne

Ann -- thanks for your input, but i don't think you read my message. We WANT to stay in the busy Kaanapali area because we want a variety of options with the baby in tow. We don't want to be confined to a "classy" resort where there are only a couple of options for us to walk around, etc. We want to meander down the path in front of the hotels, eat at hte Hula Grill and other casual restaurants that are baby friendly and have enough activity to keep us all energized. And frankly, I LOVE the Kaanapali beach area for all these reasons. If anyone else has any suggestions..please read my original post. Thanks. jeff

Anne....Jeff doesn't like the Lahaina side of Maui but after all I have read about Maui, the Lahaina, (or further on down) Wailea, Kiehi have a lot to offer. We plan to go there next week. Will be staying at the Kamaole Sands in Kiehi. Our first stay at that place. Its a condo at $105 a night. Know of anything better than that? Bob

Jeff, lighten up. I think Anne was just trying to be helpful. There is no need to respond so rudely. Is this your first child? As the mother of two, I think a vacation in a hotel room with a baby is not a vacation at all. A condo would certainly give you a lot more freedom as far as meals go. Eating out with a baby 9 or 10 months old is not a relaxing experience for you or the other people seated near you. I would have to agree with Anne - there are much nicer areas on Maui than Kaanapali.

Jill - lighten up yourself. I was not being rude...just emphasizing that we were already sold on Kaanapali and staying in a hotel. I'm looking for someone who HAS stayed there with a baby to comment on the hotels listed. And i send out the plea again...we are planning to hit Kaanapali in maui next summer with a 10 month old baby. Which of the big hotels -- Westin, Hyatt, Marriott, Sheraton -- is our best choice? Which is most "baby friendly?" Thanks in advance. jeff

Maui with a baby was absolutely the worst vacation I ever had! We didn't stay at Kaanapali, and I wished we had. With an infant it is absolutely necessary that you be able to walk almost everywhere you want to go. Traffic on Maui is heavy, and there's usually only 1 way to get anywhere. Also, our condo, though very nice, was not air conditioned, as is the case with many accommodations in Hawaii. I would recommend May or June. By July it may be too hot. Try to fly directly to Maui without connecting in Honolulu. I would definitely recommend Kaanapali over any other area of Maui because it is easier to get around. To be quite honest, I prefer Kauai or the Big Island over Maui any day.

I know you've decided to stay at a hotel with your baby. But as a mother who has traveled a good deal with my two kids from infancy on, I'd like to add that it is better to have at least two rooms when traveling with a baby, either a condo or a hotel suite. While a lot depends on your baby's temperament, a parent's rest sometimes happens only when the baby's asleep. If you have another room, you will have somewhere to go without waking up a sleeping baby in the same room; and, to state the obvious, you can't of course leave the baby alone in your hotel room. Good luck and have fun!

This post is for persons who would LIKE to stay in Kaanapali, and want a hotel. We stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, on the beach. Absolutely LOVED it, with or without kids. It's an all-Hawaiian staffed (but I'm not counting, dont sue me ) hotel, the staff even puts on a songfest in the lobby one day a week! We loved it, miss it when we arent there, and cant wait to return. I dont see many comments anywhere about this place, so I probably shouldkeep my mouth shut and let everybody go to the Sheratons, or whatever. But it was great. I think they have a 1-800 number, call for brochures! And enough of this bantering!

I would highly reccommend the Sheraton Maui on Kaanapali Beach. My husband & I stayed there for our honeymoon last June and they had just completed a multi-million renovation - basically knocked the hotel to the slab and rebuilt. It's absolutely gorgeous, open-air lobby, great views from majority of the rooms because of the design, fabulous pools with a "river" between, hotel has a great location right in front of Black Rock, a great snorkel hole. Need any more info, e-mail me.
