Maui with 15 month old..........

Hello!!1
My Husband, Son and son are going to Maui from dec 4 to dec 15th. We are staying at the Maui Kai. My husband and I went to Maui for our honeymoon and have done the drive to Hana, The Haleakala drive, strolling around Lahaina, etc. We plan on having a mostly low key vacation with some fun. I am wondering if anyone has gone there with such a young child and what are some activities that may be fun for him. I plan on taking the sugar cane ride but that's all I can think of.
Also we are flying from Boston with a layover in LA. Any suggestions on keeping the little one entertained on the plane?
Another question, we had gone to Maui in August before. What is it like in December? Is the temperature the same? When does the sun ris and set? Sorry for all the questions!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Aquarium might be fun for the little one! As for the plane ride, I always travelled with a backpack full of toys, paper and crayons. If your child enjoys a certain cd of children's songs, bring a cd player and head set. I found it a calming influence for naptime. Good Luck!

My family went to Maui when my son was 17 months. He loved swimming, visiting the calm beaches. We also did the Sugar Cane Train, Maui Ocean Center and went to the Lahaina Cannery one afternoon for a free children's hula performance. He enjoyed watching the little kids dancing.

We did plan activities around his naptime for the most part. A cranky sleep-deprived kid makes for an unhappy day for all. I discovered that reading a book on our lanai overlooking the ocean while he napped was great.

Plane tips: Make sure he has a sippy cup that he can drink from as the plane takes off and lands so his little ears don't hurt. I used to withhold drinks from my kids until takeoff to ensure they would drink. Then I put full-strength juice in the cups, something they don't usually get. It worked well. I make sure and have plenty of different snacks. Raisins are good, because they take a while to eat. Toys like the mini Magnadoodles, Colorforms, crayons are great. I always tried to have at least one new toy or book. A friend of mine suggested Playdough, but your little guy might be too young for that. Books on tape or kids music tapes, Portable DVD player if you have one. Hopefully he'll sleep a while.

You'll have a great time.

I flew from NY to Honolulu with my 11 mo son (alone because my husband was working in Honolulu). The plane trip was fine. My son was thrilled to be on a plane; it was his first trip. He spent quite a bit of time putting the window shade up and down, turning the light on and off, putting the tray up and down and playing with the phone. I brought a bag of toys and, needless to say, he was too thrilled with the plane to even care about toys.

My one problem was he did not sleep but for a short nap when we got on the first flight and a little longer one at the end of our second; he was having too much fun watching all that was going on. He did sleep nearly the whole ride back; we left in the evening. (This is when my husband was in charge of entertaining him because we all flew back together. Of course, he was the lucky one!)

I avoided changing his diaper on the planes (except when it was absolutely necessary) because one plane did not have a changing table.

I kept him in his carseat the whole time in the air. During our layover, however, I let him roam the airport the whole time.

As for our trip. We had a great time, and I am pleased we went. We would go to the beach in the morning and stay until his nap time. Then we would go back to our room and he would nap and have lunch. Then the afternoons we would do different things. This schedule worked well for us.

I will tell you, if at all possible, buy a suit that covers his body for sun protection. My son wore a long sleeve/long legged outfit and tons of sun block and even with that his lower arms and wrists, where the suit did not cover, got tons of sun (we bought ours at sunsafe.com, but one step ahead also has good outfits).

The funny part is that trip came out of the blue; my husband had no idea he was going to be sent there, and we already had a trip to Hawaii planned for early December when my son will be 14 mo. Everyone thought we were crazy to plan a vacation there due to the distance, let alone go twice. I am so happy we went and will cherish the memories of our first trip with him forever (I just wish my son would remember how much fun we had).

We have been to Hawaii a few times before so we too had covered many of the "must dos" and decided to keep things simple. I think that was the key to our success.

I really have not yet planned anything for our December trip yet. The Maui Ocean Center seems like something we will do, having never been there before, but other than that, I think we'll just play it by ear. We will be staying in Wailea and will be there during the same period as you. Perhaps we'll see you there!

We were in Maui with our then 13 month old daughter (and older brothers) last summer. Here's some tips:
I also recommend the Maui Ocean Center

We bought a baby backpack from Costco after we arrived. This allowed us to treck her to some of the more traditional attractions (hikes, etc.) where a stroller wouldn't work. We did the road to hana did alot of sightseeing with her in the backpack.

If you plan to shop in Lahaina, try to do it early in the day. It can get a little crowded later in the day to be pushing a stroller around.

On the plane, a portable DVD with her favorite Baby Einstein worked great for us. (Out of arms reach so she couldn't play with the buttons). She also liked the window shade and was easily distracted looking for "birdies" out the window during fussy times. Would recommend keeping your son in the carseat at all times if possible. It can be difficult (and loud!) to try to get them back in it after any type of "walk" on the plane.

The UV shirts are a great thing. It's hard to put sunscreen on wiggly kids and these reduce the sunscreening area significantly.

We liked to do the beach in the morning, lunch and naps, then pool in the afternoon routine. Beaches in South Maui can get windy and surf gets higher in the afternoons.

Also, be careful going to "fun" restaurants (Cheeseburger Mai Tai's etc.). For us, service was slow and the kids ran out of gas and got cranky.

Have Fun!
