Maui: Where to Stay for 2 Nights? Looking for adventure!

My husband and I are headed to Maui for a week at the end of September / early October (yes, this is last minute planning!). We are staying for the first 4 nights in Wailea. We are looking for a recommendation on what area and hotel/b&b/condo to stay at for our last 2 nights. We love outdoor activities so ideally we would stay somewhere close to hiking, horseback riding or water activities. We tend to like places that are less developed and not as touristy. Any suggesitons of areas and places to stay?

Thanks!!

You might enjoy Hotel Hana, Maui. Hana is rather serene after the day-trippers are gone. Nearby is a beautiful beach used by hotel guests, Hamoa, which is often sparsely used.

Enjoy your visit, wherever you land.

We spent two nights in Hana a few years ago and opted for a private house rental. We felt this was the most authentic experience than staying in a hotel with other tourists. The costs for a whole house are comparable to just one room in a hotel. In fact, Hotel Hana charges a hundred dollars more than a house rental will cost you. Here is one example:

I found this by googling "hana maui rentals" and there were many more houses as well. VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner) has a lot of great Hawaii rentals as well. We have rented there four different times and our experience has always been spectacular. Another advantage is having a kitchen where you can save money by not having to eat all meals out and buying local produce and meat. This helps the local economy as well.

Hmmm's suggestion is a good one. If, that doesn't work out for you however, you could stay in Kapalua. There are good snorkeling spots just south of there and beautiful uncrowded hiking spots north of there. Another alternative is to stay at the Kula Lodge in Kula and hike in the Haleakela Crater.

If you backpack and want real adventure, rent a cabin in Haleakala Crater. There are three of them and they a great. Go to the national park website for more info.
