I'm headed to Maui tomorrow. Anyone there now who can comment on the whale watching from shore? I know the number of whales was down last year. High surf has been reported for the past several days; perhaps that hampers the viewing?

I believe the whale count is up from last year.
Of course high surf will affect the viewing of whales. But the high surf comes & goes. It comes up a day or two & goes down a day or two. a few times a year another swell comes in before the first one goes down. That is usually how super high surf develops.
But there is no way to predict it more than a few days in advance.
Maui is somewhat sheltered from the high surf because of Lanai & Molokai.
