I've been quoted a price of $5500 for a ten day vacation to Maui. This includes a garden-view room at the Four Seasons in Wailea, round-trip airfare for two from Michigan, and a rental car. Is this a good deal? We will be going in October.

I would say you were not being ripped off and is probably a pretty decent price. Stayed a month ago at the Sheraton in Kaanapai, deluxe oceanview, two round trip tickets from California, car rental for five days and paid $3200. Stayed at the Four Seasons last week and saw when I was booking that online prices were running about $390 per night for a garden view. I guess you could try to break it down by airfare, hotel and car and see if it would make any difference using coupons, specials, etc., and putting the package together yourself?

By the way, you will absolutely LOVE the Four Seasons. I did not want to leave.

We did our vacation on our own, without a package and paid $190/night at the Rennaissance Wailea and $150 for a compact for the week. I know the Four Seasons is much more luxurious. If you have the time, look into pricing the same trip on your own; you might do better.

That seems a bit expensive, but prices have gone up over the past two years.

Are you booking this through a major consolidator or agency? If so, you probably are getting a fair deal.

In the end, at least for Hawaii, the bigger places seem to have the best package prices. I don't know if you have a Liberty Travel (or another Gogo affiliate) in Michigan, but no matter how hard I've tried, I can never beat the overall price they quote me from New York.

By the way, the Four Seasons is a great choice. Have fun.

Which hotel makes a big difference in price. For comparisons: Costco offers a 7 night package to Grand Wailea with car,breakfast etc for $1201 per person. Add airfare and you have your trip. Sheraton and Hyatt Regency in Ka'anapali are similarly priced. Other resort properties are less.
If you take the time to search out deals on alternate sources (eg Expedia,Travelocity) you will be surely able to beat a travel agent. Question is do you have the interest and time to do this.

Been there twice

My husband and I stayed on Maui last year for two weeks at the Plantation Inn in Lahaina--airfare, car and lodging for the two of us $3725--we used the Travel Hawaii web site. Had an excellent time and the Plantation Inn is delightful. We did the big hotel thing several years ago and much pefer a smaller establishment. Have fun

I agree with "Been there". We stayed in Kihei and much prefered it to staying in of one of the expensive luxury and isolated tourist ghettos.
I like a more local experience. But, to each his own.

That sounds about right for the four seasons. Garden rooms are about $380-400/ night. A full size car for 10 days is about $350-400. Airfare is about $1500.

You might try Expedia.com or Cheaptickets.com to see what kind of cheap airfare you can get. All of the major car rentals places offer good rates. Again try Expedia for maybe a better rate.

You won't find much discounts on the rooms. The Four Seasons web site has promotions on it. Your 7th night is free when staying more than 6 nights.

You may want to try pleasantholidays.com. They sometimes have good rates.

Shop around. Don't know if you will find anything cheapier but its worth the effort.

ive run the gamut from luxury hotels, to nice hotels, to charming hotels, to motels, to condos in my many years on the island of maui. the four seasons is nothing like any of the luxury hotels. its above and beyond. i used to be of the opinion that quaint b&bs and charming hotels were the way to go. i still go to the more affordable places because its a good price, but if i can afford it and its a special occasion, boy, im back at the four seasons in a flash, no question about it. not a lot of noise/kids if you are looking for peace and quiet. dont let anyone steer you elsewhere, go for it. oh, and the price sounds very reasonable to me.

I forgot to mention that we will also receive $300 in American Express travelers checks free. American Express Travel quoted the package for us. We've used them before in the past, but never for anything this extravagant. I checked airfare on Expedia and Travelocity, and the fare quoted is just over $900/per person round trip.
