Maui -The Whaler on Kaanapali - likes and dislikes?
I've heard different things about the Whaler, depending on what unit you're in. I've heard that staying in Tower 2 facing Whaler's Village is loud with a generator noise. Is this true? And the quieter side is the north side of tower 1, as long as you are over the hotel next door. Anything else i should know before I pick a unit?

When I was in Maui in January, one of the kaanapali high rise condo towers was doing major renovations with much exterior construction going on. It might have been the Whaler. Best to call them and ask about this.

Whaler renovations were still going when we visited in February, the tower next to Whaler's Village. Definitely check to see if they're still going on when you plan to visit.
The problem with the side facing Whaler's Village is just that - it faces Whaler's Village - you'll hear the beeping and crashing of trash haulers in the very early morning, delivery vehicle doors slamming, and yes, the generators of the shops and restaurants, etc. Though it does quiet down fairly early at night. We've stayed at the Westin, just across Whaler's Village from the Whaler, on the side facing Whaler's Village, and at times it was really annoying.
I'd try to get a unit on the other side.

I don't know about the construction but it is a very convenient place to stay. We stay in the tower farthest away from the shopping village overlooking Black Rock Beach on the 11th floor. You do hear the air conditioner from the hotel next door some. We have been going there for years, keep going back after trying other condos. Check VRBO.

Sounds like its pretty hard to avoid noise around there. That's one thing I really have a hard time with...that humming generator noise thing. Maybe I should look for a different hotel in the same vicinity. Any suggestions?

Don't disagree with Bob at all, but except for the Marriott, which does have kitchenettes since its conversion to a timeshare, none of those are condos - they're regular hotels. I'm not a big fan of the Whaler, except for the location. You can see my review on Tripadvisor under the same screen name. It was 2007, but you can't change the fact that the pool is tiny, the fitness room is in the basement, and, since the units are individually owned, it's hit or miss when it comes to decor.

My favorite accommodation on Ka'anapali Beach is the Ka'anapali Alii. We just returned from the Marriott Ocean Club and a 1 bedroom ocean view suite, and still, it doesn't compare to the Alii. I would look on VRBO for an Alii unit. One thing I did not like about the Whaler is the sign on the grills; "clean after using". No such sign at the Alii. Every day they look brand new and the outdoor dining area is wonderful.
