I read the long report on the road to Hana. What I would like to hear from now, is anyone who took the tour recently. If my husband drives it, we will argue for sure!!!Is it worth it with the construction? There is so much to seeand do! What should not be missed on Maui? We have 5 days.

We adore Hana and the road. Not familiar with your itinery but would make a point of heading out at sunrise...and exploring the many beaches of Hana. If that sounds like a horid idea, then skip Hana. So many people get confused whether it's the road that's the thing or Hana. Well Hana has a general store and gorgeous hotel with a nice gift shop. Hana and the drive is what you make of it. It is peace and heavenly. It is not something to rush thru. If you're in a rush, you may very well miss the point of the beauty. Only you can choose. To hang at the pool and relax or spend an exhausting day exploring....there's no wrong answer, just stay true to your heart.

Go to Hana and beyond to Seven Pools. And like gyppielou says, leave early.

The work being done is at Mile Mrker 11. One lane is closed, and the flow of traffic is controlled by a signal light. I've not been beyond Ha`iku since the project started, but have heard from those who make the trip regularly that the traffic is flowing well. Some days delays are greater than others, but if you leave early you can be beyond that point before the bulk of the day trippers are out there. From June 21 to July 1 the road will be closed every day from 11:30 -3:30.

Whether or not the trip is worth it for you is a question only you can answer. If I knew Dh and I were going to argue over something, I think I'd skip that activity on our vacation. We can argue at home! With only 5 days on the island, perhaps you might save the trip to Hana for the next time, when you can spend the night? What else do you have planned?

I meant My hubby and I would argue about his driving...he's one of those who looks and drives..I was thinking about taking a coach tour..the day trip to Hana...maybe polynesianAdventures tour? We rented a car and are planning on seeing the Iona Valley and we plan to take the sunrise crater tour. The other two days we probably will just enjoy the sun and the sand and have dinner in Lahina at least once. We have 6 days..5 nights..we don't leave unitl 10pm...we start with 5 days on Oahu then come to Maui. Any other Maui suggestions?

#1 - You've read the long thread on the pros and cons of the drive on the road to Hana
#2 - You are sure that you do the drive, you and your hubby will argue.

No matter what the present construction situation might be, I'd avoid it like the plague. Why in the world would you want to try to squeeze it into 5 days when you have two warnings of stress?

Spend your 5 days relaxing and enjoying each other's company elsewhere on the island!

I got back from Maui last weekend (yes, my report is not done yet and I'm late). I drove the road to Hana (again) and didn't find any of the construction to be a problem at all. At one section (where it's one lane with a signal light) we didn't wait any longer than when you come to the one lane bridges and wait for cars to pass. Farther along (can't remember where) they had actually closed off part of the main road and we had to make a pleasant detour down to the coast and then back up to the main road but this added 5 minutes tops.

But if you guys are bound to argue about driving I would agree that you should skip it for that reason.

Don't skip the road to Hana. And take a car. You can stop wherever you want and stay as long as you want when you stop.
Leave early and avoid the main traffic.

My husband and I have driven the entire road to Hana once. After that we learned that the best kept secret is the fact that the southern route is the only part really worth taking and you should drive it in the OPPOSITE direction of everyone else (ie: west to east rather than east to west). The scenery is breathtaking and you are driving all along the spectacular ocean. Once you pass the 7 pools, just turn around and go back. The rest of the way is nearly all blocked by trees and is winding to the point of being monotonous.
