hello all, 2 Canucks, mid 50's, from Edmonton Alberta planning on leaving the deep freeze for 2 weeks in late February 2012 for 1st time trip to Maui.... plan to spend 8-10 day there and then 3 days in Honolulu (Pearl Harbour etc.). Looking for recommendations for condos near/on the beach. (are there private apartment type condos with resort amenitied ?) Wailea has been recommended by a few friends ? are there any areas to avoid ? we like to walk on the beach, watch sunsets, drink wine and then do it all again and squeeze in a nap here and there ! .... maybe snorkel a bit.... thanks much !

If you are visiting the week that preceeds or includes Monday, Feb 20, you are going to find high occupancies and high rates due to the President's Day holiday. Rental cars will sell out around that time so make your rental car reservation as soon as possible.
Look at Honua Kai in west Maui for a condo + resort type atmosphere.
Just confirming what Placename said about President's Day. It's winter vacation week for many schools here so book quickly.
Perhaps your friends suggested Wailea as it's meant to be slightly warmer and have better swimming conditions in the winter.
I'd take a look at the TripAdvisor Hawaii forums for more advice. Lots of posters over there.

There are a number of condos in the Kihei area that may be available at lower rates than Wailea. It may not have the resort flavor you are seeking, though. But if you stayed there, you could always take a 10-minute drive to the resort areas in Wailea. There are some very good beaches in that area. West shore will also have many condos -- not sure of February weather there.
