Maui in May -- Bike Trip, Road to Hana?
We're planning to take the bike trip down the volcano & am wondering how strenuous it is for non-avid bike riders? With the stops made along the way, how much time is actually spent on the bike? Also, pros & cons of guided vs. non-guided trip.
Are there enough sites to see along the Road to Hana to make it worthwhile to do in 2 days rather than 1? Any recommendations for lodging along the way?

Phyllis,
I don't consider the bike ride strenuous at all, as it's all downhill! I had not been on a bike in over 30 years, so I was nervous, but it was very easy. I think the total time on the bike was only about 2 hours. We went with a bike tour company (can't remember the name) and only stopped once, at a beautiful lookout. If I had to do it again, I would not go with a tour, so you could go at your own pace.
As for the road to Hana...yes there are many sites. We took our time driving up and stayed one night in Hana and I thought it was a much better thing to do, again, you have plenty of time to set your own pace and don't have to worry about getting back before dark. I'm not sure there are any places to stay along the way...until you get to Hana. Lot's of choices. Just do a search. Good luck and have fun.

Do the bike trip! Talk to Marc at Aloha Bike tours(he advertizes only on the internet), He does a very classy trip. Rather than rushing you down the Mountain, he allows you to travel at your own pace. He stops at a beautiful flower farm for a break and finishes at a winery for lunch. He will plan a longer ride for those you want a more strenuous ride. One in our group had some heart problems, she was very tired afterwards but otherwise did fine. Enjoy!! We did the road to Hana, we started out to late(9:30) but had time to stop, swim and walk to the seven pools and drove home the "back" side of the volcano. Shellie

We checked with a ranger station for road conditions. They were fine when we were there. It is a very different view of Maui, desolete but unique. The rental companies do frown on the trip. The seven pools at Oeho Gulch are well worth the hike. Marc from Aloha bike tours does the "classiest" bike ride, small group, and ride at your own pace.Well worth the $$!
