Maui , Hawaii - Ritz (Kapalua) or FS (Wailea) in Sept.
Planning our first visit to Hawaii in Sept. Have reservations at both places because we are not sure which area will be better in Sept. Also, any suggestions on preference for Ritz or FS will be appreciated. Can't seem to find much information (pics, etc) on the Ritz on-line.

The Ritz is, of course, very beautiful. It is also closer to many restaurants, shops, etc. However, personnally, I prefer staying in Wailea. It is a nice, sunny side of the island. Also, the Ahihi bay is near-by. It is a marine reserve, great snorkling there. The surf on the north side where the Ritz is is pretty rough, especially that time of year.

You have to ask such a question? The answer is obvious, without a doubt -
THE RITZ CARLTON - its a palace and paradise all rolled into one. My sister is PR director and brother in law is the golf pro there on the Bay Course. They married in the little chapel on the grounds right there practically on the beach. It was a fairy tale wedding. Never will be topped.

I couldn't disagree with Debbie more strongly. I don't like Kapalua because there are too many cool, breezy days and I don't want to be indoors or wearing a sweater all the time when in Hawaii. The Ritz itself is...well...a Ritz, much like the ones in Phoenix and Florida and anywhere else. The hotel is not too close to the water and the swimming is limited. (And Debbie should admit that she's biased since her sister works there).
Wailea has more predictable, sunnier weather and I like the Four Seasons better. Many of the rooms at the FS don't have good views, so that can be a factor. But I would never stay in Kapalua again (Have been back to Wailea 4 times since my first stay in Kapalua).
JH if you search this topic you'll find LOTS of opinions here in the archives. There are many people partial to Kapalua. Your job is to figure out whether your tastes are similar to theirs or to those in the Wailea camp.
Or, the best suggestion of all, if you have enough days, is to split time at both....then you'll know for sure!

We stayed at the Ritz last March and at the Renaissance in Wailea. The Ritz is a first class hotel and Kapalua is beautiful. However, we actually prefered the Renaissance and Wailea. To us, Wailea was a more peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. And the beach was much better. You are a good 5 minute walk from the ocean at the Ritz. At the FS, you will be right next to the beach. That was important to us. Although I have never stayed at the FS, I have heard wonderful things about it. You really can't go wrong with either hotel.
