Maui - Vegetarian Eating

My husband and I will be traveling to Maui in 3 weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions on good places to get a vegetarian meal. The places don't have to be strictly meat-free, just looking for places that have a good meat-free selection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard that McDonalds has french fries and a cheese sandwich. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response Don.

"Ron", I'm sorry that you find healthy eating so offensive. It's good to know that some people still have nothing better to do than play on message boards about subject that they know nothing about.

rachel,
We have a son who has changed to almost entirely vegetarian eating (still eats seafood & occasional chicken), so we're always on the lookout for vegetarian dishes he'd eat if we dine out. We go to Hawaii regularly and know you'll have no trouble finding non-meat meals in regular restaurants.

Most of the Asian-influenced restaurants have a good selection of non-meat dishes as do the seafood restaurants.

A few suggestions:
- Try a Thai restaurant- usually lots of vegetarian dishes.
- Seafood restaurants are also a good bet. Try Lahaina Fish Company - it's a sister restaurant to Lewers St Fish Co. in Honolulu where we had Vegetable Spring Rolls with peanut sauce and Grilled zucchini & Eggplant in a Balsamic sauce -yumm. They also had a Pasta Primavera in a creamy tomato sauce that looked very good.

There are lots of good restaurants in Maui and I'd bet most have good non-meat items. Most restaurants post their menus outside, so you can always take a look before you decide to go in.

In short, you shouldn't have trouble finding meat-free meals. Hope you have a fabulous time!

We've never had a problem finding good meals in Hawaii although I will admit to eating a lot of fish while I'm there and loving it. Most restaurants have meat-free selections. There is also a great little vegan restaurant in Paia called... The Vegan. It's on Baldwin Avenue and has very tasty food.

I do not know of many vegetarian-only restaurants on Maui, but there is a large vegetarian population so many restaurants accomodate them. Try this link:

Rachel,

We tried The Vegan Restaurant in Paia recommeded by the indispensable Maui Revealed guidebook. It's good, but not as good as the review led me to believe. Also, we loved Maui Taco for it's cheap, quick eats & no lard in the beans! Try the wet burritoes--that's the only way I like burritoes now.

If you haven't ever tried veggie sushi, give that a whirl somewhere...I liked what I had at the Hyatt in Kaanapali, and at the sushi place at the Renaissance in Wailea.

Have a great trip!
