Marriott on Maui and Kauai.

We are booked to stay one week at the Marriott on Maui and one week on Kauai. WE are just wondering what the resorts are like. Rooms, restaurants, location? Any information will be appreciated.

The Marriott on Maui was recently refurbished and sits right on Kananapalli Beach -- right in the midst of several big chain hotels...lots of shops and restaurants and with easy access to the town of Lahaina. The beach is beautiful and offers good snorkeling further down at the Sheraton end. Although I prefer the Wailea area of Maui, you are in a great location and the hotel is practically new since the rehab.

The Kauai Marriott is very close to the Kauai airport and sits between the north and south shore resort areas...a few shops and restaurants are within walking distance, but most will require a drive (driving is easy on Kauai)...I don't really like the beach at the Marriott Kauai because it is in a working harbor, but there is nice sand and the water is calm (great for kids)...the pool at the Kauai Marriott is spectacular!

I think you will enjoy both hotels -- have a great trip!

Recently visited the Marriott on Kauai. It used to be a Westin and you can tell. The grounds are beautiful. Just driving up to the hotel is gorgeous. Didn't see the rooms as we were not staying there, but I understand both Marriotts are at least partial timeshares.

Aloha,

Agree w/ the above posters on Kauai Marriott.
Great location on the island as it is close to the airport (no noise that I've ever heard) and it's a central location. 30 mins to Poipu...40 to P'ville and around 40 to Polihale.

If you golf, 2 good courses right there and another 2 within 5 mins (The Grove and Wailua).

You can walk up to The Whaler Brew Co. for some decent brew and a fantastic view.
Duke's, Burger Hut, JJ's, Portofino all within walking distance. Poolside restaurant wasn't too bad either.

When will you be going?

Mahalo,
Kal
45 mo' days.
ps to Suz, Drove the new Pkwy. It should be done in a Porsche!

Yeah, Suzie, it used to be a Westin, alright -- it was TACKY as hell then and it's tacky as hell NOW!!! And the beach is quite unimpressive as well!!

Don't know what Steve's definition of tacky is but it's different from mine. That's why having a range of opinions is "a good thing". When we drove through in our convertable we felt that the approach was far superior to the big resorts regularly featured in posts on this board. I understand that some of the statuary and decor displayed by the Westin has been removed and that part of the resort has been converted to a timeshare. I was on a website where owners rent out their timeshares and the Marriott was on there with a lower rate than the resort charges for just a room.

Kal,
Need a porsche? That must explain it. Wait till they add the required number of stoplights for R. One at every corner. Then my lumbering vehicle will catch up with the porsches at the next light. Ha. Hey thanks for the countdown.

Go find an entomologic honey gatherer because "Tacky" is in the eye of the "bee holder". (Waddya expect for a Friday?)

The Westin remodeled the place into a "Roman Forum" type motif...After Iniki
came thru, Marriott came in and remodeled into more of a Polynesian motif.

I liked the job they did. Pretty relaxing lobby area.

Mahalo,
Kal

ps to Suuuuz....Look out for a little blond (today) driving a little green turbo beetle with a loose nut behind the wheel when you lumber along R Pwky. It's Mrs Kal hurrying home to cook dinner...hahahahaha...
She told me before one vacation "Take me somewhere I've never been before"...I told her "How 'bout the kitchen?"
