Marina del Rey?
Hi, my wife and I are going to be working in LA for 3 mos. and are planning on staying in Marina del Rey. How is it? We are coming from NYC and want to be able to walk to places. Can we do that here?

Well the LA area is car country, you are not going to be able to walk to very many places outside of your immediate neighborhood. Not sure what kinds of places you want to walk to tho. Marina del Rey is a lovely area, and yes, you can walk around the streets there but you will surely need a car if you want to venture farther afield.

Just as Lori said- it is basically impossible to survive (or at least to have any living quality) without a car in L.A.
If you want to walk around- let's say for a walk to a restaurant in the evening- I would choose to stay rather in Santa Monica, Pasadena or Beverly Hills. All of these suburbs have areas that are nice for a walk. Do take into consideration though, that you would have to live reasonably close to those districts. This is very much unlike Manhattan! So take a look at a map before you decide on staying somewhere.
Still, living quality in L.A. can be outrageously good- just get accustomed to driving. Enjoy your stay!

A previous poster suggested Manhattan Beach which is where I live. The town is only four square miles but is rather self-contained. Many restaurants, shopping malls and downtown shops, two multi-screen theater complexes, public parks (including tennis and basketball courts), a jogging path, a bicycle path, an ocean-front walking path, a pier and a beautiful wide beach. Ocean water in southern California is pollution tested regularly, and the water taken at the M.B. pier is consistently graded A+ (except after heavy storms).
There is a Green Line metro station in Manhattan Beach which, with transfers, can take you to Long Beach, downtown L.A., Pasadena, Hollywood and Universal City. You would probably still want to have a car, but you could park it for a few days each week if you were staying in Manhattan Beach.

Yea, we are completely prepared for the necessity of driving. But we would like to be able to walk for a cup of coffee in the morning or something. As far as work or a commute, I will be downtown, but only have to be there 4x's/wk during the eve's, so I am not too concerned with that. Just want a nice area that feels good to come back to.

If you'll be working downtown, you should consider the Old Town area of Pasadena. It's a great walking area with restaurants, shopping, movies. You can commute to downtown in 15-20 minutes on the new Gold Line metro rail. You won't have the ocean nearby, but you can be in the mountains in 20-30 minutes.
