It's been too many years for my account to be of much use, but I still remember the dessert I had there -- a "paper bag" made out of chocolate, filled with a white chocolate mousse, topped with fresh raspberries and the whole thing sitting on a bed of strawberry coulis.

Zagat always gives it high marks, currently a 24 for the food, same as the often touted Esca another midtown seafood place, but higher marks than them for service and decor.

Yes, I ate there and the staff was so wonderful towards me. I had lost my handbag when caught in a rain storm, all my bags disintergrated and landed all over the side walk. Bergdoff let me call the Ocean Club where I was meeting a friend who paid for the cab fare. The O.C. gave me a towel to dry my hair.
Belief it or not, a few days later the NYPD called, I got my bag back, all intact.

That's probably the nicest New York story I've ever heard!

It's also been a while since I was there but I remember it as being very good. But Patrick recently went to the Sea Grill at Rockefeller Center & said the food was excellent. It gets the same food rating (24) in Zagat as Manhattan Ocean & slightly better ratings for service & decor at slightly less $. If you're coming from out of town, a rinkside table would be lots of fun I think.

Ofcourse Le Bernardin is the best and Oceana runs a close (but different) second. Any of them will make a lovely evening.

Thanks for doing my thinking for me mclaurie. You are very right. I was answering as if maybe alybar is already set at Manhattan Ocean Club. But if there is a choice, I'd take Sea Grill. It was amazingly wonderful, and I always thought it would be so touristy. Wrong!!!
