Manhattan hotel for Mother/Daughter weekend in May
We (mom and 15 yr. old)are flying in mostly to see the show Spring Awakening. We don't need to be in the theater district at all. I'd welcome suggestions for a hotel, or even a good area under $250/night. I'm fine taking cabs and subways, but I'd like to be in a pleasant (ie not commercial that closes at night) kind of area. It would be nice to be able to walk to some good restaurants. Thanks

Have a look at several of the hotels on the upper west side. It's a mid/upscale residential area with tons of good inexpensive restaurants, easy access to the rest of the city via 2 subway lines, some interesting shopping and right next to Central Park and near several major museums.
Check out the following: more or less descending price order: Lucerne, On the Ave, Excelsior, Beacon and Newton. The latter is very simple, but clean, reliable and very inexpensive.

I don't know much about the place, but the Pod hotel is in an area that fits what you're looking for. It's on East 51st between 2nd and 3rd. There are numerous spots on 2nd for food and a police precinct just across 3rd Avenue.

In terms of rate, I've stayed overnight a couple of times at the Dylan Hotel on 40th.

Since rates fluctuate drastically depending on dates, I can't really tell what will be $250 (if anything!) at the time you're coming. On the Ave. is running a sale on their website right now and is probably the nicest hotel on the uws.
Travelzoo.com is a good place to look for bargains within a 3 month window.
If you don't mind the possibility of sharing a bed, bidding on Priceline.com is generally a guarantee of getting a room for under $250 (sometimes as little as $120-150/night). Midtown west is near but not in Times Square and if you bid 4* hotels, you'd likely win the NY Hilton. Go to betterbidding.com to see what hotels/prices people are getting.
