Maine where to go in July?

My husband and I are flying into Boston July 2nd. and plan to rent a car and head straight to Portland Maine for our first visit. We have visited Boston so we are looking for ideas for the 6 days (we fly out of Boston on the 8th) in Maine. We thought we would start in Porland and try to make a "home base" in one town somewhere between Portland and Acadia, but we are not sure which of all these charming little towns we should stay at that gives us the best access and things to do while we visit. We are foodies traveling with our small dog and love the outdoors, art, history, music and a little shopping. Any ideas would be welcomed.

If you're foodies I'd go with Camden/Rockland, but you'd better book soon as that's shaping up to be the busiest 4-day weekend in quite some time. Nearby, smaller but giving you access to the Camden area, are Lincolnville, Owl's Head, Rockport, South Thomaston and Tenant's Harbor.

Take the back roads, not the freeway.

Meander.

Go to Arcadia Nat'l Park.

Get lost.

Stop at a lobster shack in the middle of nowhere.

The Camden/Rockland area is a good choice because you could do a day trip to Acadia.

But I also like the Wiscasset area (we were camping) because you have easy access to Boothbay and the Brunswick area. If you want to see a great 4th of July parade, go to Bath.

The Rotary's chicken barbecue is pretty good, the craft fair is fun, and they have a great farmers market if you don't get there for the 4th. Parade tip: get there early, bring bag chairs and find a choice spot on the main street. The stores are open for shoppers. It's a big parade but also has a hometown feel.

Get a list of wineries, farmers markets etc you can visit. I think you might do better because of the holiday to end in Portland instead of begin there. South of Bath (shipworkers town) is Brunswick (college town) and east of Brunswick is the wonderful, rural Harpswells area. Get a map to the hiking areas on conservation property. Despite being there on the busiest week, we were about the only ones to visit some of the trails. The Giant Steps is a smaller but lot less crowded version of Ogunquit's Marginal Way. Rsstaguy is right, find all the good lobster spots. Google a list and try as many as you can. I think Five Islands had some terrific scenery but Waterman's is still our favorite.

If you're lucky, the church ladies will be selling slices of pie during the craft fair in Bath. Strawberry rhubarb will be in season.

I have to laugh at the Get Lost comment. While searching for a winery we came across the well known Morse's Deli. It's in the middle of nowhere, more inland.

Thanks clarkgriswold we thought Candem/Rockland looked like the right place, thanks for the tip.
Meander...that is our middle name, Rastaguytoday - unless there is a buffet then my husband grabs me and makes a beeline! (or a lobster shack in my case!)
Ending in Portland sounds like a good idea, thanks dfrostnh.
Any suggestions on hotels or B&B's, keeping in mind we have a small dog?

The Camden Rockland area are great suggestions. You can do Acadia from that area in a day. Any farther south and it would not be doable. Samoset is not a small hotel, in my mind, but I think they have some dog friendly accommodations in there, in Rockland.

We stayed here for a couple of night last fall with a dog. They have a large variety of types of rooms. I'd stay there again.
