Maine Road Trip for fall foliage and moose sightings

My husband and I are flying into Boston Early on Oct. 16 and leaving early afternoon on the 21. Looking for a great road trip itinerary to see the beautiful fall leaves up to Maine and back. Also, where are the moose this time of year? Must see places along the way?

The travel section of the New York Times had a big article on seeing moose last Sunday.

How far north do you plan to go? You can do a search on Maine for recommendations about things to see. I don't think you are going to see good foliage that late in October. You might do better to head south or visit Keene NH for their pumpkin festival.

I live in central Massachusetts where we are alrady experiencing some beautiful foliage. On last night's news they said the top half of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are already at peak and some spots past peak. For Oct 16, I think you need to plan southern New England.

Sharon_Moran,
Use the Yankee Foliage site to estimate the peak foliage for 10/16 and after. Don't head north into Maine, as much as I love Maine. If you are coming for the foliage, you will need to head south. The colors are beautful in central Massachusetts this week and your trip is still 9 days away.
