Maine Mountains for fall foliage --or white mountains?

Jump to last reply

we are going back east for leaf peeping on oct 1st.
after flying into portland, we would like to spend 3 nights in a mountain area w/ fall foliage (hopefully) within 3 hours of bar harbor (our next stop),

we are looking for a place w/scenery, easy to moderate hikes w/o steep elevation changes.

any suggestions?

or is it really worthwhile to go instead to the white mountains? --a longer drive to bar harbor.
