Maine - Seafood in season in October

Planning mid-October trip to Maine. What seafood is in season then? Thanks.

Everything is almost always in season - what varies is the price (usually higher in winter, especially for lobster) and number of places that are open - the lobster shack type polaces on piers don't remain open in the winter.

We've been in Maine twice in October (Bar Harbor over Columbus Day weekend and Boothbay Harbor). Everything is still open, just getting ready to end the season, lots of lobster around, clams, oysters, scrod, etc. Just don't expect to see foliage, that's all gone by late Sept.

Owlwoman, that has me confused because I look at the foliage reports and going back ten years, they are all pretty consistent that mid to last week in October is peak foliage for the coastal areas in Maine. Is this not true?

Weighing in on the foliage issue. I live in the Bangor area (which is away from the coast) and I'll bet a dollar that you'll be fine in mid-October on the mid to southern coast. I wouldn't risk my money on any later than that though. The variable is rain. If the leaves are peaking and we get a driving rainstorm that'll shorten the season by knocking all the leaves off the trees.

In Ellsworth Maine (just outside of Bar Harbor) they have a "chowderfest" towards the end of September. For $5 you can taste chowder made by several restaurants and clubs. You get to vote for your favorite. They have both "clam" and "seafood" chowders. It's the best we've ever had and I highly recommend it if you are in the area at the time the hold it. I tried to "google" it, but I only came up with past festivals.

For future reference, on the radio this morning the report was that the coast and southern Maine were at foliage "peak." I'm in mid-Maine and there is still plenty of color but we're on the down side.

And, lobster is at a 30 year low. Now it's as cheap as hamburger.
