Yes, the area around the park is safe. There are offices of a top investment bank right there. There is great shopping along Fifth Ave below 23rd st. And on Park Ave South, there are great restaurants; Angelo & Maxi's & City Crab are just 2 of many restaurants there.

To the Original Poster:
It's apparent that many people have no idea where Madison Square Park is.
The Park is located at 23rd st, between Fifth Ave and Maddison Ave.( Madison Ave actually begins at 23rd st).

It is a small park that has recently been renovated. The world famous Flatiron building is located at 23rd st, where Fith Ave & Broadway intersect.
The Metropolitan Life tower is here (not to be confused with The Metlife building that was formally the Pan Amm Building @ Grand Central)with is beautifull clock tower( The building is modeled after the Campanile @ St. Marks Square in Venice) Currently, Credit Suise First Boston, an Investment Bank, occupies most of the office space that was Met Life.
BTW, the 'Original' Madison Square Garden was located on the edge of this park.

Yes, it is a safe area if a bit quiet at night. The park was renovated and relandscaped about two years ago and it's a very nice place to sit and enjoy the outdoors. Interesting historical note - the building at 11 Madison Ave on the park, which houses Credit Suisse First Boston, was originally intended to be a 100 story building to rival the Empire State building. It was to deploy a ziggurat style architecture with multiple angles that gained maximum light exposure for as many offices as possible. The existing structure of the building was actually designed to support the tower but the work was nto completed due to the Depression. there are a few framed articles and architetural renderings in the lobby that detail this info (it is a public area). The only negative I can think of to the area for a visitor is that access to uptown is mostly through the 4,5,6 line unless you want a bit of a walk to the subway for the other lines.

I work a block away from there. Yes, it's safe. There are a few homeless people who sleep on benches at the south end of the park, but they don't seem dangerous.

There are a ton of little places around there to grab a quick lunch. 5th Avenue south of 23rd has several places with great soup, sandwiches and salad bars.

Transportation is nearby. The 6 train stops at 23rd and Park, the N/R stops at 23rd and Broadway, and the V/F stops at 23rd and 6th.

If you have any other specific questions about this area let me know - I've been working here 11 years.

Used to live a couple of blocks away, and I agree the area is pretty safe. There are alot of delis and restaurants in the area and a bit of shopping. Head down 5th Ave for more shopping and some nice stores. Up 5th Ave also to the 34th St area for more.

I would not walk around the park late at night, or any park in the city for that matter, but staying in that area is convenient to just about everything in the city.

Also the N/R train is also right there on 5th and 23rd St. The 6 train is a block away at Park and 23rd.

Have a great time while you are here.
