You have to go to the UW Memorial Union. The Rathskeller is a really interesting gathering place with a fantastic patio overlooking beautiful Lake Mendota. The do serve food and beer although the last time I was there, only those carrying current student or alumni ID's were allowed to buy beer.
Get some Babcock hall ice cream and enjoy the scenery. There are also lots of cultural events that happen there.
State street is lined with student type bars some more "historic" than others. One old favorite it the Brat House.
I was a student there several years ago (OK quite a few years ago) and those would be on my "most stop in" list.
If the weather is nice, take a walk out to picnic point or along the lake front. You can pick up the trail right off the union terrace.
My student budget did not allow me to eat at many of the nicer restaurants on the lake so I'm unable to suggest anything there.
Amanda, I live in Madison. Just take a rock and throw it. It will probably hit a pub!
Actually, there are many, many places in Madison. Definitely go downtown and visit state street, capital square area. Two micro-breweries I enjoy are Angelic Brewing Compnay and The Great Dane. But there are many, many more.
The UW Union (mentioned above) is also a good place to kick back and relax.
As far as a must see, in Madison it is the Capital. I haven't been since 9/11 so I don't know what security is now like but you should still be able to get in and wander around. Ask at the info desk if the outside observation deck around the dome is open. If it is you have a marvelous view of both lakes (Mendota/Monona), the isthmus, and the city.
Drop me a line if you have any questions.
