Madewood or Nottoway for the night?

My husband and I stayed at both Nottoway and Madewood in 2001. I preferred Madewood. It's smaller and more personable than Nottoway, but equally as austere. At the time, the room price included a wine & cheese reception, set-menu dinner and breakfast. It was well worth the price as we met some interesting people and the meal was very good. Try to get a room in the main house as opposed to the cottage. We stayed in the "Mystery Lady" room, which was quite large although the bathroom was tiny.
If you choose to stay at Nottoway, the nicest -- and most expensive -- rooms are in the main mansion. Our room in the boy's wing was small and nothing special. There's a restaurant on-site that received good write-ups in local newspapers, but I wasn't that impressed with our meal.

I stayed at both this past October and loved them both! Madewood, while not easy to find, was gorgeous! Rates include a wine and cheese reception, dinner and breakfast all of which was fine. You also have run of the house at night at both places which I really enjoyed. Sitting on Nottoways upper gallery at night listening to steamboats go up river is something I wont soon forget. I'm not hard to impress in the food dept so I thought Nottoways restaraunt, Randolph Hall was fine. My room at Nottoway was #4 and while period was decidedly more rustic than my room, "the Master Bedroom" at Madewood which had gallery access and was larger than some NYC apartments. I enjoyed my time at both, but at Madewood you truly felt like you were visiting family. Talking to the staff was educational in itself as many are 3rd generation. To be in both places at night after everyones gone home was really interesting as with the exception of a few Mallard furniture pieces there are no velvet ropes. You can also opt for a private dinner at Madewood in various parts of the home, but most people enjoy the company of the other guests. Oh, unless you've lived in Louisiana (I used to) please get the best directions you can for Madewood, trust me!
