My husband and I are mid 30's. Married 12 yrs. 2 Children, 5yr old & 9yr old girls.
We live in Alabama, about 30 mins south of Birmingham.
Our Summer Vacation has always been at Panama City Beach, Florida (since I was a baby & I am carrying on the Tradition). Due to Oil Spill, we have decided to check out the Atlantic Beaches (we have only been to Gulf of Mexico Beaches, Caribbean Islands, & Mexico).
Family Vacation: We like to be kinda in middle or right by attractions like: mini golf; go-carts; arcades; eating places; etc. - & Myrtle Beach seemed to look like a wonderful place to explore. It was rated in the top 5 of fodors and travel channel top destinations! So I know the beaches and ocean is very different on the Atlantic side, but just couldn't take a chance on the oil spill hitting Panama City Beach, FL.
So on one hand I am upset, but what a great time to check out a place that you would have never wanted to visit--so I am getting so excited.
We are going to drive straight to Myrtle & Check In (about 8hr drive) at the Landmark Resort on Myrtle Beach (Awsome Resort; Great Rreviews: & Reasonable Prices). We will then stay for 5 nights and check-out and drive down the coast on hwy 17. Don't know how far-would like to stop at Charleston and spend the night. Then drive to Hilton Head and maybe Savannah and head back to home sweet home. We have 7 days or 6-depending on if we need Sunday to rest before work on Monday.
So check out the SC, Myrtle Beach tourist board. Tons of Lodging/Accomodations and Attractions. And check out the Landmark Resort-just one of the many nice Resorts. (Check out TripAdvisor.com for reviews on hotels/Resorts on Myrtle Beach-this helped us)!!!!!
Hope this helps other fellow pcb vacationers that just can't take the chance on the oil spill.
Kimberley
Made decision--No PCB--Heading to Myrtle Beach, SC

I hope you enjoy your vacation, but I don't think you will find the same fine, sugar white sandy beaches in NC. I spent the weekend boating in the gulf and other waterways around Panama City Beach this weekend and the water has never been clearer. We rode in the Gulf from the pass all the way to the end of panama City Beach -- several miles and saw no tar balls or oil sheen -- nothing out of the ordinary. My family ate dozens or raw oysters from Hunt's, a local oyster bar.
Respecting that Carolina ocean beaches are different than gulf beaches, Myrtle is a very fun family vacation. Ocean oysters are different than gulf, but still very fine.
Your days of exploration after Myrtle should get some feedback. Charleston's famous mansions are beautiful and interesting to see. HHI is an excellent beach vacation, but not much to see on a drive through. Savannah's historic district should be of interest to all. A few famous restaurants to visit with the culture.
Sympathy and hopes to the residents and visitors of ou Gulf Shores that we miss or minimize the pending disaster.
You may want to check out Beaufort, SC, and Hunting Island State Park. It is wonderful- a maritime forest that runs right up to the beach. If you can spend a little time in Charleston, it is chock full of amazing things to do. I like Shem Creek, eating at the Wreck, touring Ft. Sumter, the carriage tours, visiting the Citadel, the Eco Island tours that leave from Morgan Creek Marina, and walking around the market. It's hard to go wrong there. Between Charleston and Myrtle, I bet you'll have a wonderful time making the best of a heartbreaking situation. Best wishes.
