My husband and I are going to be staying at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas for 4 nights in October.
I would be interested in hearing comments on the hotel and on the city in general, from anyone who has
stayed in Las Vegas recently.

I was in Las Vegas last August (hot, hot,hot), stayed at the Flamingo Hilton, but visited the common areas of most hotels with casinos. I was not impressed with the Luxor. It is very flashy from the exterior, but it is at the southernmost end of the strip; therefore far away from much of the activity. The common area was being remodeled when I was there, so it might have improved by now. don't know anything about guest rooms. Flamingo Hilton rooms were VERY nice and we were able to get a rate around $80 per night. Check the hotel search sites on the net.

Definately stay at the Luxor. It is an incredible building. You really must stay there at least once. It is also in an interesting location because several of the huge new hotel/recreation complexes are walking distance, including the New York,New York, and the MGM Grand (great little amusement park behind if you've got kids along). The airport is also five minutes which can be nice when the Strip is crowded. The City is still pretty decadent and I don't really recommend it for children or demure adults. You can have alot of fun there, no question. Have a great time!

My wife and I were in Las Vegas in January and stayed at Bally's and the Luxor. We do not reccomend the Luxor. We were very dissapointed in the service there such as:

Construction, early in the morning...lots of noise and you couldn't even eat in the deli due to the nauseating exhaust fumes from construction equipment. Our first time at the IMAX, we saw about five minutes of the movie and something went wrong so we were asked to leave. Kind of a hassle to get tix or $$$ back...long lines poor refund systema. When we returned the next day and made a special seating request (they tell you, you can do that) the help was surly and didn't allow us to sit in the area we requested. Our maid walked in on us one afternoon. I have no idea why, the room had already been cleaned, and she just walked in without knocking etc... We lost electric power for more than 20 hours in our room. No phone, no hot water and no help from the staff when we asked if there was some way we could use showers in fitness area or elsewhere. When I checked out I asked if they were doing anything for guests inconvenienced by the power outage. Only after I asked did they say they would comp us one night. They never credited our card and when we called about it they said they weren't going to comp us anything. Well, after numerous phone calls over the last four months they finally (two weeks ago) got us a check for about two-thirds of what we paid. There were a lot of other little things such as poor service and unfriendly staff. I would not stay there again. I'd suggest something a little further up the strip, closer to the action, such as MGM, NY, NY or Monte Carlo. There are too many nice places to stay with (I am sure) better service, than worrying about the hassle at the Luxor.

We did like Ballys a lot, but it is a bit more expensive.

Overall, Vegas was a lot of fun and we plan to go back asap.

I have been to Vegas several time and would highly recommend New York New York. It's brand new so no stale nicotine smell, the rooms were very resonable when we went ($69 a night), it's very close to many major hotels, Excalibur, MGM, and Luxor that offer many things to do with or without children. Check out the All-Star Cafe across the street or the movie theatres that just opened. The Luxor is nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to stay there!

We also stayed at the Luxor and I would say it was OK. My picks would be either the Golden Nugget (it's downtown) or the RIO (it's behind Caesars and most if not all of the rooms are suites).

Our Rates where:

Rio - $65 a night

Golden Nugget - $54 a night

and the MGM, but there is a free monorail that can
take you to Bally's (near the Flamingo and Caesar's)
that you catch in the back of the MGM. It can be
difficult to find, so ask. Another really cool
casino is the Rio located off the strip on Flamingo.
The Rio has a carnival atmosphere and there are
free performances several times a day. There are
also lots of shops.
