Going to Maui and have to pick and choose activities b/c of a limited budget.

For those who have done both, if you could pick only one would you do the Sunset Dinner Cruise or Luau?

I would not suggest a Sunset Dinner Cruise. I would reccomend a sunset Sail or Sunset Cruise. They typically have some Appetizers and drinks. Eat afterword at a more relaxing resturant. I would do the Luau if your on Maui, Old Lahaina Luau is great. Others I have been to have long rectangular tables lined up. Which Island were you considering?

With or without a tight budget, I'd do neither. (Yikes, don't start screaming everyone) I'm with jja, do a sunset cruise but without dinner. Similarly, I'd rather see the entertainment from the Luau than eat the food. I've only been to Kauai but we were able to go to one of the big hotels (the Hyatt or the Marriott) sit at the bar & watch the entertainment from the Luau for a fraction of the price. I'd rather splurge on a meal at a top notch restaurant than pay top $ for what could be mediocre food because it's an experience.

Has anyone else been to a luau at a big hotel on maui - is it possible to sit at the bar and enjoy the entertainment without going for the meal?
Why take the sunset cruise minus the dinner?

We ate dinner at the Marriott's Va Bene and heard the entire Luau. Also it's possible to watch it from outside. Va Bene is very good food.

The Hyatt also has pretty easy viewing from the outside. It's the closest the kids wanted to get when they were very young. You'd have to bring your own drinks!

I'd take the sunset sail without the food as well. The boats just can't provide yummy enough food for the price they charge.

You would be missing out if you did not go to Old Lahaina Luau in Maui. Also, check out Warren and Annabelles in Lahaina, magic/comedy show. Make sure to book before you go as tickets sell out well in advance for Old Lahaina Luau. Make sure to check out the Lahaina happy hours as the hotel bars are very overpriced and the views in Lahaina at many of the restaurants are as spectacular as the resorts in Kaanapail.

The "Feast of Lele" luau is also very good. I would highly recommend a luau--sure, the food isn't the best you'll ever have, but the experience is a Hawaii must.
