Los Angeles to Dallas
On our Great American Road Trip, we are stuck on how to break up our trip from Los Angeles to Dallas (home). We are willing to take 3 or 4 days to travel this leg of our trip. We want to spend time sightseeing along the way, so there's no rush.
Can you suggest a route for us? I've reached an impass...somebody help me!!!
Can you suggestion destination cities with things for DW, DH, DD 15 y.o. and DD 11 y.o.?
One option is to spend 2 days in a destination city (say Phoenix) before we move on down the road? Your thoughts on that?

If I remember correctly you are taking I 40 out to California so looks like you are working on the return portion of your trip via I 10.Two things I would definitely put on your list are Carlsbad Caverns in NM and I would make a slight detour off I 10 in west Texas and go to Fort Davis. Arrange your stop in Fort Davis to coincide with a "Star Party" at the McDonald Observatory. Also take time to tour the preserved old west fort in town. When heading home from there plan a quick stop at Balmorhea State Park for a dip in their giant cool spring water pool. Have fun.

You could consider LA to Tuscon in 1 leg then a day or 2 to see Tomostone, Bisbee and Saguaro Nat. Park. Then I-10 into NM for Alamagordo and Carlsbad Caverns befoer returning to TX, US 285 toI-20 into Dallas

Good ideas above. My thought was day 1 to Phoenix. Day 2 to Las Cruces NM. Day 3 Las Cruces to White Sands, Capitan to see the Smokey Bear Historic Park and then to Carlsbad Caverns spending the night in Carlsbad or Hobbs. Day 4 headed for home.

Carlsbad Caverns. Do the Wild Cave Tour(have to be age 12 though). Make reservations ASAP. They only take down 8 people per week on two different tours. I've done both tours multiple times. Either one is great. White Sand Dunes is a nice stop along the way. Guadalupe National Park is right near Carlsbad Caverns.
