Looking for suggestions for the trip: Vegas - Canyons - Sedona - Phoenix

Hi, looking for expert opinions/suggestions on the trip we are planning. We've decided to visit (first time) Grand Canyons and trying to build a proper itinerary to catch major highlights of the area. Originally we were thinking a round trip from Vegas, but flights from Vegas to NY are very expensive for the time we are planning to be there, so we are thinking to start our trip from Vegas and finish in Phoenix - still cheaper considering one way car rental. 4 people - 2 adults and two teenage kids. We have about 6-7 days total. We do want to spend 2 days in Las Vegas to see shows, but after that we are open. We are not planning to see everything that is in the area, as I understand it would be impossible, but at least want to cover major highlights of the area. We do want to visit Antelope Canyons.

Is it doable? Any suggestions on itinerary?

Hi Dimka, welcome back to the forums. If you type Phoenix Las Vegas into the search the forums box and click go , you will have many previous threads to read that answer your question.

Depending on your interests, you could do a number of trips and visit different National and Native American parks. Here is a map that was posted by another fodorite several years ago that I have found helpful. It has routes and distances for some of the places you might want to visit.

Look it over and see what places interest you then come back with some specific questions. Do you want hiking, history, museums, Native American archeology, etc.?

best of luck

It will be our first time ever in the area, and of course we want to see everything ;-). I know it wont be possible so we are trying to make the best out of it, yet making it a somewhat relaxing trip.
We are not into extreme stuff, so rafting, helicopter rides and such are not for us. Yes, would like to do moderate hiking, but not too far out and not too challenging. We are mostly want to so see the beauty of the area, so we would want to come back for more.
The problem is that aside of the wealth of information we find on the internet it is so challenging to plan our trip - to see major highlights of the area, pacing it appropriately and fit it within 6-7 days.
On top of than, we are dealing with logistics of getting affordable plane tickets, car rental and hotels...
Looking at the map, it also looks looks maybe we should consider start and finish our trip in Phoenix, rather than drive from Vegas to Phoenix. This way we can make Sedona as our base - as we heard Sedona itself require extra time to spend in the area. Plus plane tickets from and to NY appears to be cheaper. And car rental is definitely cheaper as we will return to the same place..
The only place that I set on to see is Antelope Canyon, as I was fascinated with the pictures that I saw when I was a kid. It was my dream to visit it in person. The rest, is should be based on convenience and location.

Generally it is less expensive to rent and return the car to the same place and Vegas generally has lower car costs than Phoenix. With four people you will have to factor in the cost of air fare for four too before you decide which would make the most sense in terms of what you want to see.

Antelope Canyon is spectacular when the sun is shining, but not so much when it is cloudy, so try to be flexible enough in your planning to go when it is sunny. I was there in the mid afternoon and thought it was wonderful, but people say that it is best at noon. It takes 3 hours to get there from Sedona and I would not want to stay the whole time in Sedona. Perhaps plan on spending a few days there and a night in/near Grand Canyon and also in Page if you do get to Antelope..

I would want to visit Grand Canyon and see sunset and sunrise. If you do go to Antelope canyon, stopping at Grand Canyon, either before or after would make sense. And you could also visit Wupatki an ancient Native American site on the way to or from Sedona.

Have fun planning and traveling.
